Joseph Manno Obituary

Passed away surrounded by his three children on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to the late Mary Louise (Hitselberger) Manno. He is survived by his daughters Mercedes Malcomson (Dennis), Joan Nagielski (Lawrence), and son Michael Manno (Sabrina). Joseph also had four cherished grandchildren: Alyssa Malcomson, Marcus Manno, Madeleine Manno and Gabrielle Manno. Joseph was a loving Uncle to countless nieces and nephews.
Dr. Manno was a long-time resident of Bethesda, MD. He graduated from Penn State University, majoring in political science, economics and history. He received his Masters Degree from American University and his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. He was a member of Theta Kappa Phi fraternity as well as Phi Delta Kappa professional education fraternity and Phi Sigma Alpha political science fraternity. He worked for the Office of the Secretary, Army; numerous other Federal Government agencies; Montgomery County public schools; and taught at the University of Maryland and Montgomery College. During WWII, he served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater of Operations with the Fleet Hospital III and the First Provisional Marine Brigade during the invasion of Iwo Jima. He also participated in the Korean conflict.
Joseph was born in Johnsonburg, PA to Salvatore and Elizabeth Manno. He was one of seven children: Catherine (late), Francis (late), Frances (late), Rose (late), Antoinette (late), and Anthony (late). He was a long-time parishioner of St. Jane Frances de Chantal church. He was a beloved neighbor and friend to many.
Visitation will be held at Pumphrey Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave., Rockville, MD 20850 on May 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. His life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial on May 29 at 10:45 a.m. at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church, 9701 Old Georgetown Rd., Bethesda, MD 20814.
Flowers may be sent to the funeral home only, or in lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory can be made to the Dr. Joseph R. and Mary H. Manno Management Endowment, Montgomery College Foundation, 9221 Corporate Blvd., Rockville, MD 20850 or Holy Rosary Parish https://dioceseoferie.org/HolyRosary/.
