Joe was one of my best friends at University of Pennsylvania, and certainly among the brightest of that crew of graduate students. I remember our hiking and camping together on the Appalachian Trail.
After leaving Penn, we met only a couple of times and at least once in DC after his marriage to Nancy. I often thought of him and his wry humor. I am sorry to just now be learning of his death, but happy to know of his long successful marriage and family.

Hi. I worked with joe at COSPO while at MItre. I have many great interactions and smile raising situations that I'd like to share with family on how he influenced and helped. I would like to share since I asked many people in last years on how to reach him in WV. I am so sad I couldn't talk to him. [email protected]

Dear Nancy and family,
You may recall that I once knew Joe very well -- at Penn, some time before he started at BBN. I saw him a few times in DC in the mid-1960s when I was working for the Army Personnel Research Office. That was much too long ago for an acquaintance that I so much enjoyed and now must treasure only in memory. I very much recall his happiness (and mine) when you were married. Our paths somehow did not cross in later years, even though, in 1988, I started doing scientific program management, nearby, for the AF Office of Scientific Research, though not in the same areas as Joe's primary expertise. I want mainly to say, here, that, regardless of the gap in time and the loss of our direct connections, knowing joe in our more youthful days, having been thoroughly infected by his humor and enthusiasm -- including his eagerness to take hikes in the Delaware Water Gap region -- I have always felt it as a blessing to have known him. Truly, whenever I have thought of him --and it was more often than you might imagine -- it brought a smile of gratitude to my heart. Please accept my sincere condolences. ...
