J.Y. SMITH (Age 74)

JOSEPH YEARDLEY SMITH passed away on January 17, 2006, at his home in Annandale, VA at the age of 74. He served as Staff Writer and Obituary Editor at The Washington Post for more then 30 years. He is survived by his adoring wife of 18 years, Mimi Smith of Annandale, VA; son, Macs Smith of Annandale; daughter, Hope Smith of Annandale; son, Henry Smith of Annandale; and by son, Thomas H.H. Smith and his wife, Wanda, of Friendship, ME and daughter, Yeardley Smith and her husband, Dan Erickson, of Pacific Palisades, CA; brother, Peter H. Smith and his wife, Jennifer Troutner of Granada, Spain; nieces and nephews and many close friends. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, January 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at EVERLY-WHEATLEY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2021 K St., NW, Suite 715, Washington, DC 20006.

Sincerest condolences upon Joe's death. He was a taskmaster, sometimes a bit of a tyrant, and one of the finest writers and newsmen I've known. His fine obit in The Post brought back a lot of intricate, serious, and funny conversations from years ago. A fine man.
