Joseph Viar Obituary
Joseph Franklin Viar, 84, peacefully passed away at home in Mount Vernon, VA, on November 4, 2025, due to complications of Parkinson's disease. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Joe was raised in Lynchburg, VA, where he attended EC Glass High School and played football. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1963, a time he cherished as one of the most memorable of his life, forging lifelong friendships. He also served on the college's Board of Trustees for many years, with a fine arts building named in his honor.
A titan in the technology sector, Joe was a visionary leader during the rise of information technology in the business world. He served as CEO of Viar & Company in Alexandria, VA, for 17 years. Under his leadership, the company built information systems for notable clients including the State of Virginia, INS, and EPA. His employees admired him, and loyalty to him was a testament to his integrity and caring nature.
Joe retired at age 50 after selling his company to DynCorp, embarking on an active retirement filled with travel, fishing, and philanthropy. He loved fishing in the Florida Keys and fly fishing in Montana, often accompanying his partner of 35 years, Bonnie Christ, on adventures across the globe—from Africa and the Seychelles to Patagonia, Alaska, Russia, and China. One of his final trips was a memorable fly-fishing excursion to Cuba.
A dedicated supporter of his community, Joe served as the chairman of the foundation board for Inova Alexandria Hospital. His passions extended beyond business and travel, embracing family, friends, and causes close to his heart.
He was formerly married to his college sweetheart, Penny (nee Lusby) Viar, mother of Lisa and Amy. He later married Susan Cruzan. He is survived by his partner of 35 years, Bonnie Christ; his daughters, Lisa Viar and Amy Viar; and his grandchildren, Desmond O'Connor and Sally O'Connor.
Joe was loved by all who met him—kind, strong, giving, and a true Southern gentleman. His warmth, generosity, and spirit will be dearly missed.
A private gathering and tribute to Joe's life will be held at the family home on November 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. If you require more information please call 703 819 3334.In lieu of flowers, donations to Inova Alexandria Hospital, The Viar Scholarship created in 1994 at Hampden-Sydney College, or the American Horticultural Society would honor his memory.
