Josephine Haar Rosen "Sally"

Josephine "Sally" Haar Rosen, 100, of Kensington, MD died on March 12, 2023. Sally was born in 1922 to Josephine Victoria and Rudolph Frederick Haar in Philadelphia, PA. She is predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Milton William Rosen, and by her sister, Charlotte Suzanne Kraft. Sally is survived by her three daughters and son-in-law, Nan Shapiro (Louis), Deborah Elkinton, and Janet Rosen, as well as five grandchildren, Eric, Michael, and James Shapiro, Sarah Elkinton and Veronica Iverson.

Sally attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She won a full scholarship to Temple University and later earned a teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education from the University of Maryland. Her husband, Milton, worked as an aeronautical engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory and later at NASA. He was project manager on the Viking and Vanguard rockets, and Sally named the Vanguard.

Sally was a lifelong Democrat, an independent thinker, and an active member of the League of Women Voters. She headed the board of the Institute for Learning in Retirement at American University and was a member of the scientific Eistophos Society. She was a teacher and director of the Suburban Cooperative Nursery School. In retirement she volunteered in the playroom of the oncology unit at Children's National Hospital for many years.

Sally was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was unfailingly supportive and loving, sharing her passions for reading, gardening, sewing, cooking and entertaining. We will remember her tremendous capacity for developing and keeping long enduring friendships and making all feel welcome in her home. She had a generous spirit and a gift for making others feel appreciated. She will remain in our hearts.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
