I often recall our time working together at Rippon Middle School. We had some great times. After I transferred to a school in the western part of the county, we remained constant. I truly miss you, my dear friend. I am grateful for the season that the Lord blessed me with you in my life.

As I think of my childhood, your kind face is painted into those memories. I always wished I could have been in your family; or that my family was more like yours. Such sensible people with gold in your hearts. Many of those admirable traits, I suspect, find their genesis in Joyce. I hope you all are doing well nowadays.

December 25, 2013

Wow! Today is Christmas and it has been nearly a year since the Lord took you home my dear friend Joyce. I woke up early this morning thinking about all the wonderful memories that I have of you. I have to praise the Lord for our friendship, which was real! I pray that Karim, Ibrahima, and Latif feel the same peace of knowing that a beautiful mother and wife left a plethora of memories lingering within our hearts. I am truly grateful that I had the opportunity to share a genuine friendship with you, Joyce. Although the past eleven months have been very difficult for me, I have peace knowing that all is well with you. I often reminisce about how we would always encouraged each other during difficult situations with a "Word" based on biblical principles. "Iron sharpeneth iron"... Proverbs 27:17. Go ahead my friend and continue to take your rest. We all love you dearly. But, God loves you best.

Your Dear Friend, Felicia

I stumbled upon this most upsetting news while searching for Iba, it seems all the worst maladies fall upon the best of souls... I remember you, from my childhood. Soft spoken, but a touch of iron in your will. I remember such a warmth in you, and I also remember that you can cook a massive amount of scrambled eggs in little to no time at all. I have always and will always remember you, seeing your face brings a smile to mine. To Abdou, Karim, & Iba, I am so sorry for your loss, and I consider myself lucky to have once been close to such a fine family.

I will always carry our times of fellowship close to my heart.I am truly thankful to the Lord for bringing you into my life for a season. Your words of encouragement have empowered me into the God fearing lady that I am today. Lord thank you for thinking enough of me to bless me with a beautiful faithful friend which I had in Joyce and I will always cherish...Amen.

I'm saddened to hear of Joyce's death. I met her @ the Black Caucus's conference in B'ham. I also bought her book which adequately and vividly descibed my own urban public library experiences. She left the world more informed through her writing of this book. May God bring her family peace.

I just found out about Joyce. We both had the same doctor and went through treatments about 5 years ago. We found we both worked at PWCS. We got together in Joyce's home a few times and became friends. I am sorry we lost touch within the last couple years. I did not know Joyce was still sick and I am so sorry to hear this. I will continue to pray for the family.

My deepest and most sincere condolences go out to the Fletcher and Ndiaye family at this time of bereavement. It's always sad to see a loved one leave this Earth, but it's even a better feeling knowing that she is no longer in pain and in a much better place. We have to set it in our hearts that one day we will meet her again. To be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord.

To the Ndiaye family,
I feel blessed to have known Joyce and would like to leave this message with you:

Just think, Joyce was here not by chance, but by God's choosing. His hand formed her and made her the person she was. He compared her to no one else-- she was one of a kind. She lack nothing that His grace could not give her. He allowed her to be here for awhile at this time in history to fulfill His special purpose for this generation.

May you find comfort in knowing that she touched so many people in a blessed way. May God continue to bless you.

Dear Latif, Sons, and Family: Joyce and I were colleagues at NVCC - she, a professor of English and I, one of the counselors. It was a pleasure to work with Joyce and our students loved her. When Joyce left the college to pursue her dream of becoming a librarian, we were happy for her, but we certainly missed her. Joyce and I continued to exchange cards at Christmas, and every now and then, I was blessed by a chance meeting with her, usually in a store. I last saw her in August 2010 at her book signing in Stafford. She was as beautiful, elegant, and stylish as ever, even after her bout with cancer. Regrettably, our meeting over coffee never happened. I was so saddened to see the announcement in the paper. Yet, I feel so blessed to have known her. Latif, I pray that God will grant you and all the family peace and comfort, and I pray that my dear friend is resting comfortably in the arms of God.

Mrs. Ndiaye was great to work with. She was always high spirited with her sweet and gentle voice. I prayed for her and will continue to pray for her family. I hope this poem can help you in your time of need as it helped me.

~When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in gloom-filled rooms,
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little--but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low;
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me--but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take,
And each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Master's plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart,
Go to the friends we know,
And busy your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss me - but let me go.

I will cherish the friendship we had for the rest of my life. Eventhough it's difficult to experience a loss, I know that when the sun sets on one side of the world, it is rising on the other. The love of God is my assurance and support. I can see my own sunsets from a new perspective.

Mrs. Ndiaye had a calming spirit that could quiet chaos. She fit perfectly in a middle school library. :-) She had a voice that sang, rather than just spoke, her words. Her beautiful smile will be missed, but I pray that her family will be comforted by her faith that compelled her to continue living, rather than wait to die. That same faith has finally carried her home.

I was blessed to know Joyce, not only as a colleague, but as a friend. I will miss her smile, her love of life, her gentle/caring ways, and the friendship that we shared. Joyce will always be, for me, an example of a true woman of God. I celebrate her life! My thoughts and prayers are with her family and I hope they will find comfort in knowing that she is at peace and resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior---Our Lord that she praised and worshipped throughout her life, in all cirmcumstances.

When I asked a colleague how Joyce was doing, she responded, "She's at peace." I couldn't have asked for better words of encouragement. Not knowing how Joyce was handling being so ill and hearing she was in hospice at home, those words meant the world to me. It was confirmation of the Lord telling her it will all be okay. Thank you Joyce for your reserved sweet spirit.
