JULIA CLAUD KAPPLER

Julia Claud Kappler, 79, wife of Charles Theodore Kappler, Sr., died on April 27, 2007 of congestive heart failure in her home in West Chester, Pennsylvania. A native Washingtonian, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2002 before moving to West Chester, Pennsylvania in 2005.

Julia, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Harry Lee Claud and sister of Katharine Sheppard Claud, was born in Washington DC in 1927. In 1945 she graduated from Madeira School where she was president of student government and captain of the hockey team. In 1949 Julia graduated Magna Cum Laude from Vassar College where she majored in Art and Mathematics. She was one of two Phi Beta Kappa inductees in her graduating class.

In 1951 she married Charles Theodore Kappler, also of Washington DC. Mr. Kappler, who died in 1993, was a lawyer, former deputy director of the Securities and Exchange Commission and partner in the firm of Alvord and Alvord. Mr. Kappler was a member of the Chevy Chase Club and the Metropolitan Club.

She was a gifted athlete and artist as well as a wife and mother. She held Chevy Chase Club championship titles in golf, tennis and paddle tennis. Her award winning art includes a sterling silver sculpture that Tiffany & Co. displayed in its New York City store in 2000.

Survivors include her four children and their families: Katharine Kappler Elek and her husband Steven of Devon, Pennsylvania; Charles T. Kappler, Jr. and his wife Doreen of Knoxville, Tennessee; Harry Claud Kappler, his wife Emelyn and their sons Harrison and Emerson of Winchester, Virginia; and Sharon Elizabeth Kappler of Arnold, Maryland.

Services are private.

Arrangements are entrusted to AUER MEMORIAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, Harrisburg, PA.
