Gone, but certainly not forgotten, the lessons I learned as one of Judge Mack´s two first law clerks have been passed on to thousands of students in my law classes and attendees at my presentations over the years. Her keen intellect, insight, kindness, patience, willingness to stand steadfast for what was right in the face of opposition and her ready laughter are all traits that have stayed with me since she hired me in 1975. We stayed in touch until she died. She is still missed to this day, 9 years after her death.

I was honored to have the opportunity to
be hired by Judge Mack and work for her in the appellate division of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. I learned so much from her,not only about the law but about
balancing new motherhood and working as
an attorney. Her wise counsel and compassion meant so much to a new mother and working attorney. She was
brilliant, beautiful and had more dignity and grace than anyone I have
ever known.

As one of Judge Mack's two clerks she hired upon ascending the bench in 1975, and as one who kept in touch with her over the years, I am truly and deeply saddened by her death. What I learned at her feet is inestimable. Losing Judge Mack is truly the loss of a national treasure. I knew she was the first black woman appointed to the court under DC's new home rule law, but until now I had no idea she was the first African American female to be appointed to a court of last resort. She was one amazing woman and I will forever carry a part of her with me. My heart and prayers go out to her family.
