Juliet Davis Obituary

1929-2025

Juliet "Judy" Davis died peacefully at home in Washington, surrounded by her family, on May 13, 2025. She was 95. Born on October 15,1929 in Georgetown, the daughter of Juliet Parris Gill and Theodore Nicholas Gill, she was a 4th generation Washingtonian. She grew up in the same house on P Street as her mother, and as a young girl would walk to The Jackson School, now the Jackson Art Center. She later attended The Potomac School and Madeira school. She graduated from The Shipley school where she had been a boarder. She went on to Pine Manor College, and after graduation, she married US Army Air Force 1st Lieutenant Edward Lawrence Davis Jr, "Ned" in December 1950. Together they had four children and six grandchildren.

Judy, always adventurous, spent many years foxhunting in Virginia and England, sailing with Ned on the boat he built, and travelling abroad. She was an enthusiastic tennis player throughout her life and was still swimming laps and walking her dog at age 94. She was an avid gardener, painter and reader, and had a great sense of humor. Her early career was spent working in the family real estate business. Later, following her passion for art and England, she traveled for decades with Ned to England to buy 19th Century British Watercolors to bring home and sell. Always one to love a party, she enjoyed holding art openings at her home. She was never happier than when she was with her family and friends.

She chaired the Christ Church, Georgetown Art show for over 25 years, which benefitted various local charities. At one time she worked as the Director of The Emerson Gallery in McLean. She supported the Washington Ballet and was able to go with them twice to Cuba where they performed. These trips were among her favorites.

She was a member of Christ Church, Georgetown, The Sulgrave Club and The Acorn Garden Club. She was a life-long Democrat. She was a passionate advocate for the environment and women's rights.

Judy is survived by her four children; Edward Davis of Leesburg, VA (Laura), Nina Davis of Charlottesville, VA, Diana Ferris of Washington and Sonoma, CA (Peter), and Jennifer Davis of Charlottesville, VA, along with six grandchildren.

The family will be holding a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please support her beloved Montrose Park, through www.montroseparkdc.org

When Teddy and I were boyhood pals, I recall dropping by the Davis residence before they moved to McLean. At various times, there was an in-progress sailboat in the driveway, a Mr. Softy ice cream truck and a bird aviary (although that may have been at the McLean house). Judy was always ebullient. Love to all you guys. Perhaps we will bump into each other some time in DC. Jock Sterling, Alexandria VA
