KATHLEEN DARMAN Obituary

Kathleen Emmet Darman
Died March 6, 2021, in Washington, surrounded by her children. She was 78. A writer, teacher and beloved mother, she called the Washington area home for half a century. She was born in December, 1942 in Boston to the former Eleanor Motley and William Temple Emmet II. Her father, a B-17 pilot in the 8th Air Force, was killed in the air over Germany in February, 1945. She attended the Winsor School in Boston and St. Timothy's School in Maryland. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1965 and received her doctorate from Tufts University in English literature, focusing on writers in interwar Britain. She moved to Washington in the early 1970s where she taught English first at Federal City College and later at American University. Her husband of 40 years, Richard Darman, held senior policy positions under four Republican presidents, including as the Director of Office of Management and Budget under the first President Bush. She raised three sons in McLean where she was still living at the time of her death. Following her husband's death in 2008, she returned to core passions - teaching, writing, reading and travel. She is survived by her three sons, William and Jonathan Darman of New York and Emmet Darman of Washington and by three granddaughters, Jane, Emma and Edith. She is survived as well by three sisters, Kristin Lee of Nahant, MA., Linsey Lee of West Tisbury, MA. and Susannah Lee of Buckland, MA. The family plans a memorial service in Washington in September, pandemic conditions allowing.
