Kimberly Liu Obituary

LIU

KIMBERLY ANNA LIU

Kimberly Anna Liu died unexpectedly in her sleep at home in London on February 7, 2023. She was 40 years old.

A native Washingtonian, Kimberly was the second-born child of Barbara Marzetta and the late Korbin Liu, and the identical twin of Meredith Lara Liu. She was married to Richard Blakeley, whom she met at law school in 2005. This enchanting daughter, sister, and wife was the light of our lives. The depth of our sorrow at her passing is beyond description.

Kimberly attended Murch, Deal, and Wilson schools in Washington. She went on to earn a B.A. in history from the University of Virginia and a J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she was a member of the law review. Kimberly's passion and specialty was American civil rights law, and she worked for several years at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in New York. She subsequently moved to the U.K., where she earned a master's degree from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. in law from University College London. At the time of her death, she was a teaching fellow in employment law at Durham University. No service planned.

Kimberly was my dissertation supervisor at Durham University. Without her encouragement there's no way that I would have completed my dissertation (or indeed got through my degree).

I'm deeply saddened to read that she has passed away. She was a brilliant tutor and a wonderful person.

Kimberly was an amazing tutor at Durham University who was incredibly inspiring in her work as an employment lawyer. My thoughts are with her family at this heartbreaking time.

Kimberly,

I'm heartbroken that you'll never get to know how valuable a contribution you made to my employment law teaching this year. You were the first lecturer who got me to proactively engage in lectures for which I will be forever thankful. I'm going to miss our email exchanges about fringe topics in employment law.

Rest in Peace, and Rise in Glory

Dear Barbara, Meredith, Kathryn and Richard,
I want to express my heartfelt condolences to all of you for Kimberly´s passing. I have very fond memories of coaching soccer to all three Liu sisters in the late 1990s in Washington, DC. I am not at all surprised to read about the amazing work and contributions Kimberly went on to make professionally. My heart breaks for your loss. Please know you are in our thoughts and hearts.
Sincerely,

She was a force of energy, a curious and courageous thinker already in middle school with a million questions and a fire in her belly. And she was funny, too, and such good company. She loved her family, loved her sisters. Heartfelt condolences to all of you. She was robbed of her years, but she made a powerful impression in her short life. I'm so deeply sorry for your profound loss.

She was such an inquisitive, passionate, focused eighth grader. I remember her curiosity, her drive, her willingness to work hard and long and with such attention to accuracy. Kim wasn't going to cut corners to get to her destination. She adored her parents and her sisters, too. The entire Liu family was a force of good will, and Kim's role as eldest daughter in this happy group made her proud. I'm deeply sorry to learn her time was cut so short, and send her mom and sisters and all her loved ones my heartfelt condolences. She made a deep impression as a young teen, and I will remember and feel grateful for those memories for all of my life.
