Not sure what to say?

Kate Haakonsen

July 10, 2014

A classmate only just mentioned to me that she saw news of Kim's passing in the Ursinus magazine which I hadn't read yet. Kim and I were roommates for two years and dorm mates for four. We did a poor job of keeping in touch. I always hoped we would remedy that... I am very sad to hear she is gone so young and extend my deepest sympathy to her family. Kate Swanson Haakonsen

I am sorry for your loss. I knew Kim from Ursinus College, we acted together and were friends. She was a remarkable person! May God's grace and comfort be tangible in your loss.

It was with very deep shock, when i learnt about her death. May her soul rest in perfect peace. The Lord will also give the family the strength to bear the loss. It is well in Jesus name. Taslim Alade.

To Dr. Russell M Tilley and Betty Tilley, I am so sorry to hear of Kim's passing. I remember playing with her when we were very young children. I'm sure you don't remember me, but my parents were Richard and Mavis McCoy.

The Board and Members of the ASPRS Potomac Region offer their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Kim Tilley. Everyone from the region who has spoken with me has expressed their sense that we have lost a good friend. Kim's pleasant attitude and wise advice was greatly appreciated by everyone from student members to veterans of the society. Indeed several mentioned that Kim was calm and gracious under pressure and has quietly helped members of all ages through administrative, bureaucratic and personal crises in their lives. We were privileged to have known and worked with Kim and are better for it. The Potomac Region will remember her for a long time for her contributions to the life and functioning of our society.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time as we all mourn her passing and treasure the memories we have of her cheerful presence at our national and local conferences. It will be months before we adjust to the fact that calling ASPRS Headquarters seeking her wise counsel will no longer get us the vintage Tilley advice that we still need; there are big shoes to be filled and although Kim will have a successor she will not easily be replaced.

Allan Falconer,
President, ASPRS Potomac Region 2013
on behalf of the Board and the Membership.

I first met Kim over five years ago. I had the opportunity to see her in person at the ASPRS annual conference every year, and I also had the chance to interact with her during the SAC monthly teleconferences over the course of two years. Many memories of her flooded my mind since I received the notice of her passing, but there are three in particular that stand out. Once I made a serious mistake while volunteering. Kim made sure I learned my lesson, but after that she treated me as if the incident never happened. I admired how graciously she handled the situation. The second memory was made when I needed an urgent letter of recommendation. I had forgotten that Kim was away on a conference, and contacted her about it. She produced an excellent letter within an hour despite manning a booth at the same time. My other favourite memory was when I would point out to Kim famous professors whose books and articles I had read. She would simply walk me over to them and introduce me. “They are just people like you and me” she would say.

January 14, 2014

My sincere condolences to Kim's family, friends and colleagues for your great loss. I have been a member of ASPRS for over 40 years, though more active in the last 20. While I never become an officer in the Society, I have worked a lot with the Kim and the headquarters staff. I can't recall any conference that I've attended over all these years when I didn't see Kim calmly working behind the scenes to ensure that everything was running smoothly. I will always have fond memories of our trip together to China to attend the ISPRS conference. I'm sure I will think of Kim whenever I attend any future conferences and will never forget her.

I just learned of Kimmy's passing right now and am stunned. Kimmy and I are summer childhood friends as every summer when she came to visit her grandparents in CT she would always come over to my grandparents farm next door where I lived. Oddly enough Kimmy and I got to visit with each other this past July for the first since we were about 18. We had a great time reminicing about the cows etc. bringing back a lot of good memories. I am devastated as I was planning to see Kimmy on my next visit to MD. Sweet dreams Kimmy.

I worked closely with Kim since she joined ASPRS and I am stunned and deeply saddened by her passing. Kim was the heart and sole of the society making many things happen behind the scenes. She was a visionary with the student and young professional programs. I was able to spend much time with her on our trips to the ISPRS Congresses in Istanbul and Beijing. Most recently we spoke about her daughter Katie coming home from college. Our kids are the same ages and we have a lot in common. Almost every day since I heard the news, I have found myself thinking - that is something I need to talk to Kim about. I am not sure when I will recover enough from this tragedy. My heart goes out to her husband, Jack, and Katie during this very difficult time. They are in my prayers.

As a contractor working with Kim and the staff at ASPRS for many years, there was never a dull moment or lack of conversation when she was around. I enjoyed our discussions about our daughters and the latest places we had visited. She was 'family' to us and treated us as such. Her footprint has been left and will be remembered.

January 12, 2014

I first met Kim in the spring of 2001 at an Executive Committee meeting in St. Louis, and was immediately impressed with her knowledge, experience and understanding of the Society's affairs. None of that changed over the next 12 years other than I gained a better appreciation of her patience, friendliness and never-ending sense of humor. A highlight for me while working with Kim was our participation in the 2008 ISPRS Congress in China. I joined a group, which included Kim, Jack and Katie, that took an excursion to the ancient city of Xi'an. I really enjoyed joining them on this fun-filled adventure, and, most importantly, I was able to witness Kim's deep devotion to her family. What a joy it was for me to be part of that experience.

A wonderful person has left us and she will be deeply missed.

Kim's name has been synonymous with ASPRS ever since I can remember. She was always there when you needed her and worked tirelessly. I enjoyed working with her and she will sorely be missed. My deepest sympathy for family, friends and colleagues.

I got to know Kim through the years: she was always there when I needed to talk with somebody at ASPRS. I'm really saddened about her death. My condolences to her family and co-workers.

January 10, 2014

Although I never met Kimberly, Richard and I were co-workers for many years. I've always been struck by the love, loyalty and devotion Richard has for his family. I was a recipient of that devotion in 2003 when my companion died suddenly. So, it's no great surprise to see in this guest book how many lives Kimberly touched in her short time here. And while she'll be missed by many, it's a comfort to me to know that she's no doubt in a place more beautiful than there are words to describe.

As an ASPRS student member, Kim Tilley's name is ever-present. Most prominently in PE&RS magazine, friendly email reminders, and Student Advisory Council communications her support of students appeared nothing short of tireless. A few of us were fortunate enough to meet her at the 2013 National Conference and experience live and in-person her genuine dedication to students and deft management of several challenges. She leaves us to grieve her loss and to celebrate her remarkable champion spirit. Our deepest sympathies and condolences to her loved ones.

I am still stunned, and now more so profoundly saddened, to have read of the passing of my friend Kim. I came to know Kim for many years in the professional realm of ASPRS, but it grew to admiration, respect, a resource, and as a friend. My memories of Kim can be summed in her compassionate advice “this is how you do it” when I am frantic about meeting a deadline of an article or a conference program. My attendance to an ASPRS activity is never complete without mingling with Kim, cracking few jokes, and ending with a smile and best wishes.
In every measure, Kim has left a lasting positive impact, not only on individuals, friends, and family, but on a whole segment of the professional geospatial community. Her presence shall definitely be missed in Louisville.
My deepest condolences to her family and the entire ASPRS staff and members.

January 8, 2014

I first met at a GeoTech conference in Silver Spring a number of years ago, where ASPRS had their Bookstore and booth all set up. During the breaks I had an opportunity to talk to Kim at great lengths, and also got to bond with her as a number of us helped Kim load up her booth and boxes of textbooks into her car. During this time she also took the time to speak with me about opportunities to get involved at the National Level -something I thought was only achievable by more seasoned professionals. Her mentoring helped open doors I did not know were previously there.

This story is not unique, as Kim had a big place in her heart for the students and Young Professionals in our organization. She knew how important they would be to the long term health of our organization, and because of her efforts, she has created a lasting legacy within ASPRS for many years to come.

The loss of Kim is going to create a large void in ASPRS; no conference will ever be the same without her. She was truly ASPRS's mother, and her "children" will dearly miss her.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Kim's family. If Kim had made this large of an impact to my life, I can only imagine the impact that she has made on that of her family members. We, at ASPRS, also appreciate any sacrifices you have made in order to support Kim's dedication to her job at ASPRS.

Still cannot live through this sad news. Felt unreal when we did the SAC monthly meeting without her voice just now. Kim has been always supportive to students and SAC. I remember clearly she helped me edit the GeoLeague Challenge announcement thousands of times during the summer. She showed me around the picture-like ASPRS office when I visited Bethesda. My deepest condolence.

January 7, 2014

On behalf of CaGIS members, I would like to express my condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Kim Tilley. Ms. Tilley contributed significantly to the professions associated with photogrammetry, remote sensing, and geospatial information science through her work with ASPRS. She will be missed by all, but, her work will continue to have a positive impact for years to come.

AS I posted earlier, I am Kimmie's cousin and spent our childhood with many fond memories. As I am reading the posts, I am amazed at the worldwide impact she had made and so many friends through her job. I will be taking my Mom to comfort Betty and Russ and hope to share my experiences with Richard on becoming an only child. My daughter and granddaughter will also accompany Mom and I to celebrate Kimmie's life. Look forward to seeing the family but not for this reason.......Peace Kimmie with Love

After Katie and Shelby graduated in 2000 from The Primary Day School, it was nice to reconnect with Kim a couple of years ago at Kenwood, bowling with her father. She had such a hearty laugh and was such a good sport; my husband and I always looked forward to seeing her at the bowling alley. She is going to be sadly missed. Katie, our deepest condolences to you and your father.

Kim and I are cousins and my fondest memories are from when we were youngsters playing at the farm, playing Canasta on the screen porch, laughing in her big bed that I fell out of often and eating bananas until we were sick. I am so saddened by her death and will be supportive of the family during this difficult time.

January 6, 2014

I knew Kim through my association with ASPRS. A great ASPRS/KIM memory is when we all went out for dinner in Anchorage AK (2003?) – it was an informal dinner party for the women members of ASPRS – all ages! We all had a great time.

My deepest condolences to the Family and the ASPRS Association. I am truly saddened to hear of her death.

January 6, 2014

I am so deeply saddened by this news about Kim, I met this talented young woman when she was just starting to find her way in the professional world and joined out staff at CTFA. Her enthusiasm, fresh ideas, and team spirit were truly welcomed by a group exploring new ways to support an important industry. I am sorry I lost touch with Kim in recent years but fond memories endure. My sincere condolences to Kim's family.

Kim was my "go to" contact at ASPRS as long as I have been involved. She was always helpful and pushed the organization forward with her devotion to the job.

I was stunned to learn of her passing and have been thinking of her loss from time to time since. My family and I are praying for her family & friends in this hard time, along with the Lord's will and promise of eternal peace in Christ shown through despite the temporal pain of her loss.

Kim, we'll miss you.

I had planned to grieve in silence, lost in my own personal Kim Tilley recollections, but a remembrance from the ASPRS Student Advisory Council surfaced some long-forgotten feelings. I, too, was once a student… of Kim's. As a newly elected officer, I was taken under her wing, and I, along with so many of us in the ASPRS family, became better members of the community because of Kim's mentoring and tutelage. I repeat all of your wishes for prayers and condolences to Kim's family, but also to us, her ASPRS family. I know we're hurting, too.

I am praying for the family, Richard, Katie, her mother and father, and her brother. I know Kim will be and is missed by each and everyone of you. I pray God Peace will over take you during this time. Please know we are here for you. 2 Corinthians 5:8 states: We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to present with the Lord..
