FARKAS
L. PETER FARKAS
L. Peter Farkas of Washington, DC died at the age of 78 on Monday, December 12, 2022.
Peter was born in Budapest, Hungary on June 15, 1944. After the German occupation of Hungary, Peter's family was stationed in Prague. As Chargé d'Affaires, his father worked to reconstitute the Hungarian government. In 1948, his family was forced to flee Prague. In 1951, while they were living in France, his parents were offered work at Radio Free Europe ("RFE") in Munich. At the time, RFE was transmitting information to people who, because of the Cold War, lived behind the Iron Curtain. Peter grew up speaking four languages: German, English, Hungarian, and French.
After attending the Munich American School in Germany, Peter moved to the United States and attended Syracuse University. He earned a law degree from Suffolk Law School and then earned his JD in International Law at Georgetown University.
In 1968, Peter moved to Washington, DC where he worked in the Anti-Trust Division at the Justice Department. When Peter moved into private practice, his area of expertise remained patent, intellectual property and antitrust law litigation. In 1990, Peter successfully argued a case before the Supreme Court in which he represented the Air Courier Conference of America against the United States Postal Service.
Peter made partner at several law firms. He was also a founding member of Halloran Farkas & Kittila LLP. Peter and Michael Halloran had been friends for over 40 years and promised to one day start their own law firm; in 2017, they did. After Peter's passing, the partners resolved to keep his name in the firm as an honor to Peter who supplied valuable intellectual property and litigation advice to its clients.
In 1994, Peter and architect Robert Gurney renovated a 1940's brick and aluminum sided rambler behind Georgetown University. The project earned an award from the American Association of Architects and was featured in local and national magazines.
Peter loved life in the Palisades, Foxhall Village and Glover Park area. When not traveling, he spent mornings at the Starbucks on MacArthur Blvd and evenings at one of the local restaurants. At Starbucks he was part of "the Starbuckaneers" community and Rocklands BBQ in Glover Park even designated a parking spot, just for him.
Peter's hobbies included photography, travel and sports and these took him to many places, far and wide. He documented his travels with photographs of landscapes and cityscapes. A collection of Peter's photography can be found on his website
www.peterfarkasphotography.com. Peter loved to play tennis, basketball, windsurf, ski and ride his bicycle.
Peter is survived by his sister, Krisztina "Kiki" Farkas and her son Philip Farkas, both of Södertälje, Sweden and his daughters and their families: Nicole Farkas Mogul and Ken Mogul of Washington, DC and their children Sylvie and Nora, all of Washington, DC; and Katherine and her former husband Gabriel Guzmán and their children Wanda and Pao all of San Francisco, CA.
A memorial will be held Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church: 4835 MacArthur Blvd, NW, Washington, DC
