LANSING FELKER Obituary


Lansing Raymond Felker, Jr.  
Lanse Felker died of myeloma on December 6, 2017. Born in St. Louis, MO, on July 29, 1934, he graduated from the University of Chicago and served in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot before returning to Chicago to complete a master's degree in political science. He moved to Bethesda, MD in 1961 and served as a military, political, industrial, and international policy analyst at the Bureau of the Budget, the Defense, Energy, and Commerce Departments, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology before retiring in 1999. An avid tennis player, he captained several teams and also served as President of the Edgemoor Club in Bethesda. Mr. Felker was an accomplished raconteur and guitar player, known for his wide-ranging intellectual interests, keen observations on human nature, and appreciation of all forms of music and good cigars. A generous and insightful mentor to many, he was deeply loved by his family and widely admired for his brilliance, good humor, wit, and wisdom, and for his courageous approach to life. His first wife, the former Janet Ruth Summers of St. Louis, died in 1979. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Barbara Allen Felker of Bethesda; six children, Lansing R. Felker III of Newfane, VT, Andrea Mackey of Cashmere, WA, Deirdre Sumida of Seattle, WA, Jennifer Carr of Takoma Park, MD, Daphne Larkin of East Calais, VT, and Chase Felker of Silver Spring, MD; a sister, Mary Elizabeth (Molly) Lunsford of Bethesda; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on December 16, 2017, at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 3001 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC. 20016, with interment to follow in the St. Alban's columbarium. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Alban's Church or the University of Chicago.
