Laurence Cohen Obituary

Laurence J. Cohen, 92, of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away on December 24, 2024 after a short illness.
Born and raised in Washington, DC to Harry and Ethel Cohen, Larry attended Wilson High School, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and Yale Law School. Working for short periods of time in the family business, Cohen's Picture Framing, Larry went on to a stellar career in law.
He spent more than 50 years championing the rights of working men and women by representing labor unions, serving as the General Counsel of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO and the Asbestos Workers Union. In this capacity, he argued, and won, 4 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was nominated by President Clinton to serve as the General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board.
Larry had a great sense of humor, stopped to talk to everyone he bumped into and was a die-hard Washington Commanders fan.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Jo; children Hal and Jill; grandchildren Katrina, Matthias, Reese, Logan, Theo and Mason and Lexi; daughter-in-law Clemencia and son-in-law Thor.
The family will hold a private service.
