Leon Wynter Obituary
LEON E. WYNTER
Recently returned to the D.C. area, Leon E. Wynter passed from this life in the arms of God on January 18, 2011, after a valiant struggle with brain cancer. His daughter, Grace, mother, Sylvia, and brother, Stephen, survive him. His father, Rupert, and sister, Rochelle Bingham, preceded him in death. He left a host of relatives and devoted friends, including Yvonne Wynter and Karen Brown, to mourn his death. Funeral service January 26, 2011, at Eastchester Presbyterian Church, Bronx, NY. In lieu of flowers, please make contribution in his memory to Montgomery Hospice, Casey House, 6001 Muncaster Mill Road, Rockville, MD 20855.

Leon was a treasured colleague and friend to all of us at the Wall Street Journal. He was brilliant, expressive and an original. I can vividly recall so many long phone conversations we had from time to time...it was a treat and a pleasure to hear Leon expound on politics, business, race, of course, and all the issues of the moment. He always enlightened and clarified and made me think harder...

To Leon's family...
I've known Leon since his days at The Washington Post. We kept in touch periodically during the intervening deacdes and we not only reminisced about our days growing up in NY, but also addressed the myriad issues of the day. Funny, I always found myself marveling at Leon's continued evolution. With each encounter, I found him all the more brilliant, inquisitive, witty, intellectually curious, stimulating, thought-provoking and socially conscious. I always came away more enlightened - and challenged. Leon has left an indelible mark on so many, and for this I am grateful. May the Good Lord keep the Wynter family in His embrace. With deepest sympathy...

I came to know Leon in the newsroom of The Wall Street Journal. You couldn't miss him. He like myself stood at 6'6" He was an insightful man with an eclectic taste and a good wit and a passion for jazz and computers (Mac!) that eventually made me a convert. We also shared a common aspect of being grandsons of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, and often discussed the common aspects of our shared heritage as lived in the US and in the UK. Leon had a great way in both his conversation and writing of bringing that vital element - context. I will always remember him. My condolences to the Wynter family.

Here are a few things I know for sure about Leon - he was a wise and witty co-conspirator, an ever-encouraging presence to his fellow strivers and a marvelous writer. Above all that, he loved Grace so much. Words can't express how much I will miss him.

I knew Leon at Yale, in Washington, D.C. and then again in NYC. Each encounter was filled with warmth, wit and a wonderful optimism. I will remember him as an outstanding person. Heartfelt wishes for strength to his family. Vicki Assevero (NYC)

Leon lived in a room at the top of the stairs of my Yale entryway. But we shared more than that portal in common. We both hailed from the Bronx, shared Jamaican roots and iconoclastic takes on the world we observed from a relatively privileged perch. In later years, my graduate students were assigned American Skin, expanding their minds and Leon's bottom line. (Well, that's what friends are for.) That assignment always led to the semester's most thought provoking discussions. Who knows where the path of inquiry he started them on will lead? But in sparking those questions in the minds of others, he lives on.
May the Lord bless him and keep him and make his face to shine down upon his Grace for all the days of her life.

Whenever and wherever I encountered Leon, over two decades, he was always warm and generous. He was the embodiment of a gentle(man). My deepest condolences to the Wynter Family.

I first met Leon more than 20 years ago. He was an invited speaker at an event at Duke University. As you can imagine, he was insightful, thoughful, and deep. I appreciated his column in The WSJ. Many years later, we were to meet again on a Christian Retreat in Connecticut. Needless to say, it was a pleasure seeing him again. My deepest and sincerest sympathy to his many friends and family. Love and Appreciation to all of you.

My condolences go out to the family of Leon. Although I did not have the opportunity to interact with him often over the more than thirty years that I knew him, he always warm and friendly. He exuded a love of life and the intellectual curiosity that marked his professional career. I was always impressed by his willingness and ability to tackle a variety of somewhat controversial issues through his work. May the memories that you have of him serve to comfort you during your moments of sorrow.
