Rev. Leonard James Downs
The Reverend Leonard James "Jim" Downs died peacefully on January 28, 2024.
He was born in Washington, DC, on October 7, 1940, and grew up in Hillcrest Heights, MD, with his parents Leonard J. Downs, Alta "Lois" Downs; his sister Portia "Betty" Downs Donovan Lichtenberger of Louisville, KY, and his brother Paul Downs of Solomons, MD. A beloved Catholic priest, he will be missed by his sister, brother, nine nieces and nephews and 15 great-nieces and nephews, as well as a multitude of members of the many parishes he served in The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington and in the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware.
There will be a visitation at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville, MD, from 3 to 7 p.m. on February 6, 2024, followed by a Vigil Mass at 7:30 p.m. The following morning at 10 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Father Downs.
His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Father Downs' name to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org/get-involved-now/donate. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Services.
