LEONARD SCHEMPP Obituary

LEONARD F. SCHEMPP (Age 91)
On Friday, November 14, 2014, Leonard F. Schempp, Jr., of Washington, DC. Mr. Schempp was born in Los Angeles on September 26, 1923. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946. That same year he married his beloved wife, Kitty and started his family. He proudly served the U.S. Navy in many capacities until receiving an honorable discharge in 1959. These years were the basis of some of his dearest memories. He immediately began work as a Project Engineer for the Department of the Navy Bureau of Ships. His success in developing tactical display systems and dead reckoning systems earned him a Superior Accomplishment Award and a Presidential Citation. He worked on the Apollo Space program developing ocean area tracking stations with NASA and the U.S. Air Force. He received NASA's Apollo Achievement Award and the Department of the Navy Award of Merit for Group Achievement. Upon retirement, he received the Superior Civilian Service Medal. Due to his abilities as an engineer, he had his own business serving the local community. He served as an usher at his church. He will always be remembered as a wonderful and generous man. He worked hard for family and always put their wellbeing ahead of his own. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Catherine "Kitty" Dolan Schempp. He is survived by his seven children, LCDR Leonard F. Schempp, III, USN (Ret.), Michael F. Schempp, Patrick A. Schempp, Col. Catherine M. Schempp, PhD, USA (Ret.), Terrence J. Schempp, Mary Ann Rimel and Rosemary Schempp, MD. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may call at Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Western Ave. at Quesada St., NW, Washington, DC, Tuesday, November 18, 2014 from 10 to 11 a.m., where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment private. Many fond memories of Uncle Leonard and Aunt Kitty growing up in the DC area. Visiting with them and all the Schempp cousins on Christmas evenings especially comes to mind. Thankful for having been able to visit with Uncle Leonard in the not too distant past while on a visit here with Leo in Big Bear, California.

May he rest in peace. Condolences to all my Schempp cousins-you are in our thoughts and prayers.

We were very lucky to have had our Father, Leonard, in our lives and to enjoy life with him for so long. The photo is from his 91st birthday celebration at which time he recounted his blessing of having a full life. He loved my mother and missed her terribly and looked forward to the day that he would rejoin her. As a religious man, he was ready to face his maker in the next life. We are comforted by his strength of beliefs and joy of spirit.
