RUTH MEYER Obituary

RUTH H. MEYER
Passed away peacefully at home in Silver Spring, MD on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Ruth was the mother of three, grandmother of five, and loving wife to the late Richard I. Meyer. She led a rich and remarkable life. Ruth and her family fled Nazi Germany when she was 10 in 1937, and she went on to become a wonderful American woman, wife, mother and dear friend to many. After arriving in New York from Germany, her family later settled in Chicago. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in Commerce. It was at UI, near the end of WWII, she met Navy veteran Richard Meyer. They were married in 1949. In 1961, Richard's career with the Food & Drug Administration, brought the family to Rockville, MD. In addition to raising a family of three, she later worked as a Standards Clerk at the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST). She was a welcoming hostess, enjoyed sewing, museums, socializing and walking, was an avid reader, and lifelong correspondent to far-flung friends. Her social life with Richard, family and friends included classical concerts by the NSO and the BSO, her long-running weekly exercise program in Rockville and travel throughout the United States. In retirement, she and Richard took longer trips, especially enjoying Switzerland and visits with extended family. Ruth continued her interest in the arts, ushering for many years at Arena Stage and The Olney Theater. A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Leisure World Inter-Faith Chapel, 3680 S. Leisure World Blvd., Silver Spring, MD at 1 p.m. A reception will follow in the Maryland Room at Clubhouse One. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ruth's memory to Montgomery Hospice or Planned Parenthood.
