Linda Steele Obituary

Linda Carol Browning Steele passed away peacefully at home in Burke, VA, on May 26, 2025, while her daughter held her hand and played music. Also affectionately known as Mamaw, she was born at home on July 3, 1941, in Burlington, NC, to John Edison Browning and Ethel Lee Styers Browning.
Linda graduated from Walter M. Williams High School in 1959 and earned a degree in education from Elon College in 1966. Her greatest professional joy came in her final role, supporting children with disabilities in inclusive classrooms. She passionately believed in the dignity and potential of every child, ensuring her students felt loved, valued, supported and empowered.
A longtime member of St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, she was active in the Frances Allen Circle, Altar Guild, and broader church life. Linda was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, teacher, neighbor, Methodist, avid reader, Hallmark devotee, fan of oldies tunes and classic Hymns, traveler, and writer of heartfelt letters and cards. Linda showered her cherished grandchildren with love, kindness and compassion. She was active in their development and deeply loved by her grandchildren.
Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Steele and beloved family and friends.
She is survived by her children: Sabrina, (Jim) and their sons James and Jonas; Brian; Kevin (Tara) and their children Annalise and Hudson.
She modeled an inspiring way of facing the end of life with courage, strength and honesty. As a friend recently noted, "...your mom is beyond a mom with how much she is a part of all your lives."
A graveside service will be held June 3, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery, celebrating her legacy of love, caring, patience, strength, grit, caring for others and unwavering belief in the equality and dignity of all people.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Foundation (research), Ronald McDonald House Charities, the USO, DAV: Disabled American Veterans, the VFW, or FeedAFamily.
