Lokesh Bazaz Obituary

BAZAZ, DR. LOKESH KUMAR (AGE 58)

Peacefully, on Sunday June 26, 2005, LOKESH KUMAR BAZAZ, M.D., M.R.C.P. of McLean, VA breathed his last, surrounded by the love and prayers of family and friends. The day marked a brave end to Dr. Bazaz's three-year struggle with a brain tumor, which he fought with strength and determination. Born in Kashmir, Dr. Bazaz graduated from medical school in Mangalore, India. He served two stints at AIIMS, New Delhi, then received two coveted MRCP designations from the U.K. and Ireland. He concluded a fellowship in nephrology in Rochester, NY before settling in the Washington area. In 1983, Dr. Bazaz founded the Virginia Nephrology Group and over the past two decades cared for thousands of patients at Arlington, Fairfax and Alexandria Hospitals. He was formerly a Clinical Associate Professor at Georgetown University and was recognized as a Washingtonian "Top Doctor" several times. In whatever he did, Dr. Bazaz lived every day with a contagious love for life, an undying commitment to his family, patients and community, and a selfless spirit of giving. He leaves a strong legacy behind to all those whose lives he touched so dearly. He is survived by his wife Malini, his daughter and son-in-law Komal and Jamieson Smith, and his son Gautam, as well as many beloved family and friends in America and abroad. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 28, at 1 p.m. at ARLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 3901 North Fairfax Dr., in Arlington. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to the American Cancer Society, Attn: web, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454 or by phone 1-800-ACS-2345 or online at www.cancer.org.

Dear Malini, Komal, Gautam & Jamie,

We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences on your loss. Lokesh was truly a good man whom we all loved. We hope you can find comfort in the fact that he lived such a full life, and touched so many people in the brief time that he had. Our own family considered him a kind and gentle uncle, and a faithful friend. In our grief, we feel blessed that we had the brief opportunity to know him. His was, indeed, a life well spent, albeit cruelly cut short by a horrible disease. He will ALWAYS be in our hearts and prayers. God bless your family.
