Died peacefully at home in Alpharetta, GA on September 27, 2002 after a long but courageous battle with lung cancer. Margaret was born in West Virginia to Mary and William Crawford. She was the widow of the late LTC (Ret.) Samuel A. Howell, Sr. She is survived by two children, Dawn Y. Bostick and Samuel (Butch) A. Howell, Jr.; one grandchild, Moriah A. Bostick; son-in-law, Robert A. Bostick Jr.; brother-in-law and his wife, David and Irene Howell and many cherished family members and friends.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband and mother, Mary Lawson, and her father, William Crawford. She leaves behind no siblings.
Margaret served as a valued and well loved associate of George Mason University for 20 years. She began her career there as a secretary for minority student affairs, and through hard work, dedication and enthusiasm, she rose to the rank of "Equal Opportunity/Title IX Coordinator and Diversity Specialist". In recognition of her valuable contributions, George Mason University has created the Margaret C. Howell Diversity Award, which will provide an annual award to students, faculty, and staff who exemplify the characteristics Margaret exuded throughout her life. Her family is blessed in the knowledge that her legacy at George Mason will continue.
Friends may call at the DEMAINE SPRINGFIELD-ANNANDALE CHAPEL, Backlick and Edsall Rds., Springfield, VA on Sunday, October 6, 2002 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Alive Gathering, 6820 Commercial Dr., Springfield, VA on Monday, October 7, 2002 at 11 a.m. (Casket open from 10 to 11 a.m.) Interment in Fairfax Memorial Park, Fairfax, VA.
