Margaret Seufert Obituary

Margaret Rose Seufert died on July 21, 2024 in Alexandria, Virginia. Born on November 1, 1954, in St. Joseph, Missouri, Peggy was the daughter of Henry Seufert and Colleen (Delaney) Seufert.

Peggy's mission in life was to help other people, especially the less fortunate. She sought to help people find and apply local human and financial resources to solve the problems they faced. Peggy served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay and subsequently served in senior positions with the Peace Corps in Poland, Romania, Thailand, and the agency's headquarters in Washington. In Romania, Peggy was instrumental in supporting the initial development and subsequent spread of Girls Leading Our World (GLOW), a Peace Corps program that encourages girls to become active citizens by building their self-esteem and confidence and increasing their self-awareness. More than 25 years after GLOW began in a single country, it now benefits girls in as many as 60 countries in which the Peace Corps operates.

Peggy also worked for Arlington County's Refugee Education and Employment Program, the Center for Applied Linguistics, the Maryland State Department of Education, and the American Institutes for Research. She also served on the board of directors of Beyond Borders, which supports efforts to end poverty, violence, and injustice in Haiti.

Peggy was dedicated and committed to helping friends and strangers in as many ways as possible. She was a true friend and mentor to many people whose lives she influenced. She took considerable pride in their achievements. Peggy will be missed by the many people she worked with and nurtured.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Richard Tobin, her brothers, Robert, Brian, Kevin, and James, her sister Janet Johnson, and nieces and nephews. Peggy's parents and her brother Mark predeceased her.

A celebration of Peggy's life will be announced later. Memorial contributions can be made to the National Peace Corps Association, 20 F Street, NW, 7th Floor, Washington, DC 20001.

Peggy was always my invaluable support when I lived with Na Nini in Ybycui. I was assigned to pilot environmental education programs in the elementary schools in Ybycui. It was challenging and I would get discouraged when few if any people came to my first workshops. Peggy offered constant wisdom and encouragement. Thanks to her I stuck with it. Not only was she helpful she was also fun. We laughed a lot and learned a lot together. I am sorry I lost touch with Peggy over the years. My loss.
The photo is from a visit Peggy and Kate made to my house to meet the toddlers David and I had just adopted from Colombia. There she is again, smiling and supportive.

Peggy was not only a wonderful friend but also my first mentor mom. She taught me so much, including the nuances of executive function in bilingual children, the 4MAT teaching method, and the importance of transferable skill sets. After my time in the Peace Corps, Peggy encouraged me to take a professional job that would develop my negotiation and influence skills as well as business acumen. She was always grooming me to have a strategic seat at the table. Her wisdom, guidance, and unwavering support have left a lasting impact on my life. Peggy´s warmth and spirit touched everyone who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
