As a former District of Columbia resident who began my career as a District government employee in 1979, under Mayor Marion Barry's administration, I was deeply saddened to hear of Christopher Barry's passing. May God grant his soul eternal peace.
May his family's faith in God be a source of comfort, strength, and peace now & always. And may each of you remember "LOVE NEVER DIES".

Remembering you as a toddler, so cute and so FULL of energy. You were my very first summer job!Your mom let me watch you a few times after we hit it off at my 8th grade graduation, I kept stopping you from running off the stage. I think you just wanted me to chase after you because you'd burst into giggles whenever I caught you.... I was so saddened to hear of your passing. I remember seeing you on TV one day being so shocked that you were a grown man.....I guess I'd let time fly by me. I still remember you as a little guy who like to run and have me catch him. So cute and Full of energy....so full of life. I will always remember you that way. Sleep well.

... After my stint had end as the first African-American Miss Cherry Blossom Princess for DC/USA (1970), the Mayor and First Lady reached out to me to be a special guest at a social event (so glad I still have the many photos).
Now I reach out, and pause, to celebrate your stint in Ward 8.
Please expect a keepsake gift from me --in memory of Chris --for his beloved grandmother.

To Christopher's grandmother, stepmother, cousins, friends, just know that others care about your loss. When the rubber meets the road, we all have family members who are either struggling now or in the past with some of life's issues. Bottom line, Chris was your family and you loved him. Thank God for allowing Chris to be born into this mean world and still bless others. May God comfort you now and in the days and years ahead.

To the Barry Family I feel a special connection to Christopher. Ms Effie and I had our sons a day apart at Columbia Hospital for Women in 1980. My son had the middle name of Christopher and my husband at the time changed it. Ms Effie at that time told me that she liked the name Christopher and was going to name " Christopher MationBarry" and my conversation to her was " no ma'am " name him after his dad and she did and she named him Marion Christopher Barry. Many people don't know that most think his actual name was "Christopher Barry ". My son came the very next day June 18, 1980.. The night I got to the hospital. Ms Barry had just taken the last private room and Marion Barry Sr told the hospital staff that they had better find a room for me for he didn't know my husband at the time but he knew my husband s brother. I was just a lost for words when I heard this last Sunday morning getting ready for church You do have my deepest sympathy

To The Barry Family:
I was truly moved to learn of Christopher's death.
I was friends of his father for so many years. I wrote a tribute to him, during his inauguration that was presented to him by his staff, on my behalf.
I attended many meetings with him on Capitol Hill, as well. I remember when Christopher was born. What joy he brought to both of his parents.
My oldest daughter, Belinda L. Benjamin is a lifetime member of the alumni of the Barry Leadership Institute.
May God wrap his loving arms around each of you and help you to tunnel through the difficult days ahead.
Prayers and condolences are being extended to grandma Harris and the rest of the family.
I lived in Wash., D.C. for 28 years and in Capitol Heights, Maryland for 17 years. Enjoyed every moment there. I have since relocated to North Carolina.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul
