MARK EDWARD MACK (Age 50)
On Friday, May 11, 2012, Mark Edward Mack, of Fort Washington, MD. Born in Cincinnati Ohio. He will live on in the hearts of his wife Cindy Mack and their daughter; father Augustus Mack; mother Betty Lou Garrison Mack; sisters Michele and Whitney Mack; two brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law; eleven nieces and nephews, and countless aunts; uncles, and cousins. Viewing 1 to 2 p.m. and Service immediately following to be held on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Howard University, Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, 2395 Sixth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20059. Private interment.

Professor Mack was a Master Teacher. He was a powerhouse of knowledge and humbling in significant ways words cant explain. He was my teacher at Howard! He held down the anthropology department to stay rooted and in truth. I miss him.

I just happened to Google Mark yesterday, curious as to what he would have accomplished in his career, so the news was quite sad. Mark was a classmate and friend of mine when in 1985 at Howard University we were taking a course on representation of Africans in the art of antiquity. Mark singularly impressed me when we were talking about our day-jobs and he said that he curates (I think) "about 6000 human skulls" at the Smithsonian (if I recall correctly).

Godfather- one having a relation to someone or something analogous to that of a male sponsor to his godchild:as one that founds, supports, or inspires. This definition of what a godfather can be holds true to my Uncle Mark, not as a man who founds, supports, OR inspires, but one who did ALL three. A man that helped create a foundation for me to grow from built on a love for education through sending me historical books, national geographic magazines, and summer hikes through John Bryan State Park whenever he was home. A man that made sure to call every birthday and holiday and a little times in between to let me know if I ever needed anything he was there. A man that stood as an example to always do what you're passionate about because that is where you will excel the most. As I sit here on this day forced to reflect on the impact Uncle Mark had on my life, there is no memory I have that I'm not fond of. He was there for me since day 1 literally, and I know that his spirit will go on with me forever. To Aunt Cindy, Mrs. Mack, Aunt Michelle, Mr. Mack, and baby Amirah, say not in grief 'he is no more' but in thankfulness that he was. Make yourself familiar with the angels and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you. I am ALWAYS here for you all!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
