He was very accomplished man and a truly a scientist of tremendous breadth. I have been following up on his pioneering 1975 findings regarding opiate-induced up regulation of adenylate cyclase since 1995. Val Watts, Ph.D. (Purdue University)

A note for Joan Geiger, if you can forward this to her. I am a first cousin to Joan (and was to Marshall), as my mother was the older sister of Marshall's father, Harry. I am hoping to contact Joan to greet her, after not seeing her for many, many years. If this reaches her, my email is [email protected] (Barbara Klipper Francis) Rye, NY

I first met Dr Nirenberg at a Cold Spring Harbor conference on Molecular Neurobiology in 1983. We exchanged experiences on neuroblastoma cells. I recall his kindness, humility, and grace, from a Nobel Laureate to a naive graduate student.

A wonderful man. Orest Hurko captured his essence so well.

It is sad to mark the passing of a trusted mentor, role model and kind man. He taught so many of us that quality trumps quantity, that its better to ask the right question rather than to game the system with inconsequential papers. Thank you, Marshall.
