Martin Rabinovitz Obituary

Ever friendly, funny, warm, and optimistic despite living with devastating effects of MS, Marty finally succumbed at the age of 78 after a valiant 40 year struggle on Saturday, December 28, 2024.
Marty grew up in Milwaukee (parents Jack and Julia Tannenbaum Rabinovitz) and spent most of his adult life in Chicago before relocating to the Washington area last June to be closer to family.
His beloved wife Kathy (Katherine Bayer) passed away in 2002. Survivors include his devoted sons Joshua (Dr. Rachel Adams) and Daniel (Diana Huang); and dear sister Lana Steinberg (the late Hal Steinberg). His four grandchildren Jay, Sadie, Hannah, and Jack were the light of his life. Graveside services will be at 12 Noon, King David Memorial Gardens, Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

I was on the Habonim Workshop with Marty in 1965-66 on Kibbutz Urim. He was just about the kindest person I ever met, and never a word of complaint. Years later we met up again when he visited in Israel, at his uncle´s home in Haifa. He certainly didn´t have an easy life, but was always positive. I´m so sorry he´s gone.

I was on the Habonim Workshop with Marty in 1965-66 in Kibbutz Urim. I never heard him utter an unkind word about anyone, or complain about anything. Years later, he visited Israel, and I went to see him at his uncle´s home in Haifa. Still the same kind soul, although his life was not an easy one. May he rest in peace.

I was on a year program with Marty at Kibbutz Urim in Israel 60 years ago. He was sweet, kind and funny. Liked by everyone. Was lucky to get to see him again many years later when he was visiting Israel. His upbeat personality hadn´t changed a bit, though I know he didn´t have an easy life.
Very sorry to hear he´s gone. No doubt in my mind you have many wonderful memories to hold on to.

My deepest sympathies to your family. I sang in the Temple Beth Israel choir with Marty for many years and became a friend of his outside of the temple as well. The fact that Marty showed up as consistently as he did to choir rehearsals, given the illness he was bsttling and the corresponding compromised immune system which put him at Whitehall far too often was an inspiration to me. And here was this septuagenarian with MS still somehow managing to be involved in the care of his nonagenarian mother.
The MS robbed Marty of any vocal strength, but I could tell that he had an excellent voice at one time. Despite his severe health issues, he had an upbeat attitude and an inner strength and grace that is very rare.

I am so sad to hear of Marty´s passing. He was a kind, caring and selfless person. We were next door neighbors for many years and our families shared many good times together. Sending my love and condolences to Josh, Daniel and their families.

Marty was a beloved member of Temple Beth Israel in Skokie, IL. For years, he was able to sing clearly in the TBI choir, Koleynu. He sang at the High Holidays and during the year. We loved him and will miss him.
