Mary Roy Obituary

Mary Estelle Roy, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away peacefully at home on October 15, 2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on May 18, 1943, in Washington, DC, Mary was the beloved daughter of the late Bernie and Estelle Gallagher. She graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame, where her grace, intelligence, and athleticism first began to shine. Mary went on to build a meaningful career, beginning with the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, where she met the love of her life, Louis V. Roy. The two were married on June 12, 1965, at St. Xavier Church in Washington, DC, beginning a beautiful life together.
Mary's professional journey was as varied as it was inspiring, reflecting her strong entrepreneurial spirit. She brought her talents to companies such as Arbitron, Pizza Express, and Shop & Check, where she worked as a secret shopper. In every role, Mary was known for her integrity, work ethic, and warm presence.
A devout Catholic, Mary had the special honor of serving as May Queen in the procession to the Blessed Mother — a role she cherished throughout her life. Remarkably, the procession took place along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC. She was also an exceptional athlete—especially in softball—and maintained her competitive edge, often triumphing in spirited games of Rummikub and cornhole. Mary found her greatest joy in her family. She was ahead of her time when it came to filming all of her sons' athletic accomplishments and never missed an opportunity to celebrate their milestones.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lou Roy. She is survived by her devoted sons: Victor Roy and his wife Marlee, of Annapolis, MD; David Roy and his wife Kristen, of Fernandina Beach, FL; and Joseph Roy of Rehoboth Beach, DE. Mary also leaves behind her adored grandchildren: Tyler Roy, Ryan Roy, Cole Roy, Amanda Roy, and Ashley Roy; and her cherished siblings, Patricia Shutello and Bernard Gallagher.
Mary's legacy of love, faith, and strength will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. on November 15, 2025, at St. Mary's Parish, 109 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis, MD 21401. Reception to follow at the Annapolis Yacht Club Sailing Center.
