MARY UGAST Obituary

UGAST Mary Larkin Ugast Mary Larkin Ugast, beloved wife of the Honorable Fred B. Ugast, died peacefully at her home early Saturday morning, July 11, 2015 at age 91. Born 1924 in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, the fifth of six children, she was a tremendously strong woman, committed to her family, her faith, her friends, and her community. Mary's generosity of spirit, her warmth, and her laughter were legendary, and endeared her to all who knew her. After high school Mary and her family moved from Mahanoy City to Washington, DC, where she worked for the Washington Law Reporter. Soon after, she met her beloved husband of 65 years, Judge Fred B. Ugast, former Chief Judge of Superior Court, Washington, DC. They were married in St. Patrick's Church, Washington, DC, on September 5, 1949. Mary devoted her life to her husband, their six children, and 14 grandchildren. Talented and energetic, Mary served as President of the Sodality at Blessed Sacrament, her parish church. As her children grew up, she once again entered the work force and served as the manager of the Christ Child Opportunity Shop in Georgetown, Washington, DC, and finished her career as the Executive Assistant for the Williams S. Abell Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping feed the poor, until her retirement at age 80. Mary loved to entertain, and her sense of humor and easy laugh put everyone at ease. She loved to cook and to bake, and her holiday candy cane pastries were famous, especially for those lucky enough to receive them - she made dozens and dozens. She was a vibrant and vivacious woman with a great sense of humor; always ready to laugh, she loved swimming, the beach, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. Mary always had a kind word for everyone; she was beloved by all who knew her, and she will be missed. She was predeceased by her parents, Anna and Joseph, her beloved brothers, Joe and John, and her sister, Eileen. She is survived by her husband, Fred, her children, Susan Coneys, (J.J.), Ann Greenwood (Tom), Fred Ugast (Linda), Tom Ugast, Eileen Hudson (Chris) and Joe Ugast (Suzanne), and 14 grandchildren, Meaghan and Colin Coneys; Tommy, Liz and Rachel Greenwood; Frederick, Lindsay and Anna Mary Ugast; Spencer Ugast; Kevin, Cory, and Kyle Hudson; Joey and John Patrick Ugast; and her two sisters, Anna and Kathleen Larkin. Friends and family wishing to pay their respects are invited to the viewing at DeVol Funeral home, 2222 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, on Sunday, July 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. (complimentary valet parking available). A second viewing from 10 to 11 a.m., followed immediately by a funeral mass, will be held on Tuesday, July 21, at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 3630 Quesada Street, NW, Washington, DC. I can't believe it has been five years since Mary passed. After she left us, I went to visit to convey my respects personally to Judge Ugast. He welcomed me enthusiastically. We chatted about Mary and various other topics of the day. Sadly, it was the last time I had the pleasure of speaking with him. What an extraordinary couple who contributed so much to the city they called home and its people.

My dear Judge Ugast neighbor and friend and to all the Ugast clan

I was deeply saddened to learn that Mary died ten days ago. We share a great many laughs during our shared lives at The Wrstchester. Sadly I now live in Mexico for much of the year and missed the gathering to celebrate her life. It was a rich life indeed. To find Fred and then bring such a remarkable group of children into this world. I will miss her bright smile laughter and wit.

I'll best remember Mary's humor and sense of mischief. When I was dating the girl across the street, Nancy Ash, in 1951 or so. During the formal good night kiss on the front porch we could always count on the flickering on and off of the Ugast porch light! We're still married and have enjoyed the whole Ugast family over our lifetimes. What a celebration her life was! Chuck Duvall MD
