MARYAM STEININGER Obituary

Dr. MARYAM Y. YEKTA STEININGER
Maryam "Dokhy" Yekta Steininger left us on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 in Washington, D.C. Her two children, Francine Mithra and Marc Kaveh were with her throughout her life and in her final days. Dr. Yekta Steininger was born to Jafar Yekta and Assieh Tofighi in Hamadan, Iran. The family moved to Tehran where her three brothers, Mahmoud, Ahmad and Hamid, were born. As a young woman and with her father's encouragement, she came to the United States to study law, linguistics and education. She received a Master of Science in linguistics from Indiana University and continued to Columbia University to study psychology. At Columbia, she met and married her husband Dr. Jacques Steininger. She and her husband lived in France before returning to Lexington, Massachusetts. She later went to New York to complete a doctorate in International Communications. Since then she worked in the field of education in New York and later in Washington DC, where she lived for 25 years. She had a keen desire to understand the world and human nature. In her retirement, she published a book titled "United States and Iran: Different Values and Attitudes Toward Nature" to explain and understand differing value systems and how this might help improve negotiations to resolve Iranian/American conflicts after the Iranian Revolution of 1979.Maryam spent her life dedicated to her family, balancing her multiple friendships and interests with her academic and professional career. Those who knew Maryam will remember her as a loving relative and loyal friend. She was buried at Parklawn Cemetary in Rockville, MD on Saturday, November 30, 2013.

Francine and Marc, learned only yesterday from the barans of Lexington about your mother's passing. So sorry. She was a lovely woman whom I am so proud to have known. Let me know if you are ever here in California. [email protected]
