It is with deep sadness that I learned Desmond had passed away. He was a wonderful boss, mentor and friend to me. He was always available to us all for good advice or a good laugh. My condolences to J.R., Felicity, Tim and the grandchildren.

It is with profound sadness that I learned of Desmond's passing. When I first joined the World Bank staff in 1979, Desmond quickly became a role model and mentor, one whom I've admired ever since. He had an understanding and appreciation of both what was needed in the countries under his purview in the Bank, and also a willingness to dig in his heels whenever the situation required. His management style personified the need for patience, discipline, empathy and understanding when dealing with government ministers and their political concerns. Perhaps most importantly, Desmond had an instinctive ability to motivate a rather quellous staff (background noise that he pointedly encouraged!) while keeping our focus on those values that made us all rise above the fray - our dedication and belief in the work we were doing to improve the lives of the poor.
The world is better off because of Desmond. And none of us who knew and respected him will ever forget those priviledged moments we were able to spend under his leadership and guidance. I cherish his memory.
