Maurine Mann Obituary
MANN MAURINE HAWLEY MANN (Age 87) On February 3, 2011 Maurine passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family. Throughout her long battle with cancer, she inspired many with her quiet resolve, courage, dignity and compassion for others. She nourished an instinctive talent for making and keeping good friends. Maurine was born January 20, 1924 to Bessie Blanche (Matthews) and George B. McClelland of Sandoval, IL. Bessie died within a month Maurine's birth, and she was adopted by her loving aunt and uncle, Mary Margaret (McClelland) and Giles Nelson Hawley of Sandoval. She graduated from Sandoval High School in 1942. She attended William Woods College for a short period before marrying Lyle E. Mann, a soon-to-be aviation cadet. Over his 34-year US Air Force span, Lyle became a career fighter pilot. They raised their 4 children on 4 different continents. In 1976 retired General Lyle E. Mann and Maurine began civilian life in Northern Virginia. In 2005, they moved to a military retirement community in Melbourne, FL., where General Mann died in 2008. Maurine returned to her beloved Virginia. She called The Fairfax, a retirement community near Fort Belvoir, VA, her home. Maurine will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with her husband of nearly 66 years, Brig. General Lyle E. Mann, USAF (1923-2008) and next to their oldest son, Major Robert W. Mann, USAF (1944-1987). She is survived by daughter-in-law, Nancy L. Mann (widow of Robert W. Mann); daughter, Lynda Sue Mann; son, David A. Mann, his wife, Linda; and son, Mark S. Mann; her 7 grandchildren and their spouses: Matthew A. and Karen Mann; Gary and Michele L. (Mann) Turner; Michael A. Mann; James W. and Dr. Allison C. (Mann) Henschel; D. Scott and Bethany K. (Golden) Kregar; Thomas R. and Amy E. (Mann) Gehlen; James P. and Tamara (Golden) Lankford. Her 17 (and growing) great grandchildren will dearly miss their smiling G-G Ma. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 9, 2011 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 South Washington Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 (703-549-0074). Funeral services will be at the Old Post Chapel at Fort Myer, VA on March 10 at 11 a.m. with interment immediately afterwards in Arlington National Cemetery. Due to Arlington security, friends wishing to attend the funeral and interment services should gather at Demaine Funeral Home to join the procession which will depart on March 10 at 9:30 a.m. sharp. In lieu of flowers, Maurine expressly wished that donations be made to the Air Force Memorial Foundation, One Air Force Memorial Drive, Arlington, VA 22204 (703-979-0674).
