Megan M. McClung Obituary

SAN DIEGO (AP) _ A spokeswoman for the U.S. Marine Corps has died in Iraq, becoming the first female Marine officer to be killed in the conflict. Maj. Megan M. McClung, of Coupeville, Wash., died Dec. 6 in Al Anbar province, the Department of Defense said in a news release. McClung, 34, was a public affairs officer assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters at Camp Pendleton. The exact circumstances surrounding McClung's death were not immediately released, but Camp Pendleton spokesman Navy Lt. Cmdr Cliff Carnes said she was escorting media when she was killed. The journalists she was with were not seriously injured, he said. "She was a Marine's Marine," Carnes said. "She exemplified everything that it was to be a warrior, she was a great personality and a great friend." Her boss in Iraq, Lt. Col. Bryan Salas, said McClung was an advocate of media coverage of military operations, and while in Iraq she managed the Marine media embed program. Carnes said McClung, who was unmarried, was in the final month of a yearlong deployment to Iraq. McClung joined the Marine Corps in May 1995 after graduating from the Naval Academy. A call to her family home in Coupeville was unanswered. Three other female Marines have been killed in Iraq, according to the Defense Department's most recent numbers. Lance Cpl. Juana Navarro Arellano died in April after being shot in Anbar province. Lance Cpl. Holly A. Charette and Cpl. Ramona Valdez died in June last year when a suicide bomber attacked their convoy. In all U.S. military branches, 60 women have been killed in Iraq. Fifty-two of these women were in the Army. Details of McClung's burial at Arlington National Cemetery were being finalized.

Hey, Leilani i know its been years honey i really miss you i visited your grave so many times since i was wounded two weeks after your death. honestly i never got over you i cry still to this day sometimes all day you made me whole everyone knows about you prowess running and in athletics and your professionalism you certainly left a bold reminder of your short time on this earth. i tried to move on but, unfairly measured them against you so i have been alone. i moved closer to Arlington to make it easier to visit daily sometimes i sit and just talk to you other times i wait some distance away because you have visitors i assure you Leilani you did not die in vain you have inspired so many young ladies. well honey you probably know i was diagnosed 4 months ago with bone cancer at this point i cant fight anymore its spread i am not afraid i still come a couple of times a week sometimes more when the pain is so bad i can barely take it. sitting and talking about or reading runners world to you even with the chill in the air i feel a warmth enveloping me and the pain is gone i do not take the pain meds they prescribed because i want to see my last sunset thinking of you holding one of the hundreds of pictures of us together with a clear mind. when i pass it will not be long in coming i will buried a short distance away see you tomorrow if i don't come maybe we can go for a run together up there go easy on me i haven't run for awhile. love, RJH

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't remember Major McClung and mourn her passing because of how much of an AMAZING, inspirational person she was. She had this vibrant personality that was contagious and on top of that she was an AMAZING leader that lead by example. I still recall the day our unit was told about her passing and my heart sinks every time. You will always be missed... Semper-FI

I do not know Megan well, or personally met, but I have you in me everywhere I go I SHOW it to people to holler it out to the farest reach of the world. I could not only feel my sadness, but with a poppy, a stripe, or an incurable sorrow heart. Today, I still remain with you one day until I sell my life to give in my tired and poor soul back to redeem my wish that I long yearned for.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Hi, Sis:

I am finally able to leave a note to You.

Of course, You have been on my MySpace site from its inception. For Memorial Day 2008, I used the photograph from Your gravesite as my MysPace icon photograph, for most of May.

This year, I lost another Sister (also a USMC Major), but She received no recognition on any of the sites. She is included with You, on my MySpace site.

You have made anybody who knew You/knew about You, from here in O.C., proud, and You are most certainly NOT forgotten.

May Your Soul Rest - In - Peace.

I would like to pass on my deepest sympathies to your family. I met Megan while we were in Baghdad with KBR. I still remember the first time I met her; it was my second morning in Baghdad. She was out running very early in the morning. She had just completed her run, and she was smiling. I would see her every morning for the remainder of my time in Baghdad until she left KBR, but it will be that first time I saw her that will be forever etched in my mind with her smile as she completed her run that morning. I thought to myself, things can not be that bad here if she is out here running and smiling. My heart was saddened upon hearing the news of her fate.

It should bring some since of pride and comfort to know that she touched so many with her smile and attitude. I will always remember Megan with that very bright smile and how she brought some sense of normalcy to a place filled with chaos and glum.

May god bless your family and keep you in his hands.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Dear Megan and Family

This is a fitting day to honor, admire and pay tribute to women soldiers. Mother’s Day is a day that pays tribute to the woman that is always a caretaker, courageous and a protector of her family. As a Mother hen spreads her wings to protect her chicks from death and will sacrifice her life if needed, so has Megan spread her golden wings to protect each American Citizen from evil and give back to each one of us another day of Freedom. We are eternally in your debt for your sacrifice. You have established your right of Motherhood and to be in the presences of the Creator of the universe.

May God bless your family.

I feel fortunate to have known Maj McClung. I served at Camp Fallujah for four months as a contractor. I did not work directly with Maj McClung, but it was impossible to work at Camp Fallujah and not know who this inspiring officer was. I served with many fine officers before I left the Marine Corps, but Maj McClung stood out from her peers. In my view, she struck the perfect balance between serious professionalism and personal warmth. This is not an easy balance for a female officer of Marines in a combat setting. Maj McClung was confident without being arrogant. I ran with Maj McClung in an organized 15 kilometer race around Camp Fallujah in the summer heat. As she seemed to do in much of her life, Maj McClung finished first by a wide margin. I am blessed to have known her even so casually and briefly, and the Marine Corps and United States is blessed to have had her selfless service.

“Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

I was shocked to hear of Major McClung's death. I met her last November when I embedded - as a journalist for The Times of London - with the US military in Ramadi, and she was in charge of my programme. She was a wonderfully vital, energetic, engaging personality, who was clearly regarded with great respect and affection by her colleagues. She was part of a fine team that appeared to be making a real difference in one of Iraq's most violent cities. She will be greatly missed, and I send my deep condolences to her family.
