MELVIN L. BERGHEIM (Age 87)
On Sunday, October 20, 2013 of Alexandria, VA. Former Alexandria Vice Mayor, Mel is the beloved husband of the late Donna F. Bergheim; father of Beth B. Silver (Darwin), Laura A. Bergheim (Jim), David A. Bergheim (Christy) and Maria L. Bergheim; brother of Bette Lustig (Claude), Jerome Bergheim (Diane) and Sylvia Kaufmann (Robert); grandfather of Christopher and Timothy Stephens and Andrew and Brian Bergheim; step-grandfather of Jennifer Hickman and Quentin and Heather Silver; great-grandfather of Morgan, Addison and Julian Silver; also survived by beloved friend Gila Harris. Memorial service at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, 3830 Seminary Rd., Alexandria, VA on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center. http://donate.splcenter.org, 400 Washington Ave. Montgomery, AL 36104.

My neighbor and friend. Now there was a marriage. He and Donna carried a common mission to improve Alexandria. They cared about the schools and their art programs and supported the wonderful Metro Stage. Good citizens, wonderful children and a love affair that carried them thru their marriage. It was hard to see him without Donna but as he carried on without her he was a gentleman to all. He was able to attend the premier of Gees Bend that is still running at Metro Stage and carried on with his dedication to the theater right up to his passing. A true role model and mentor to many. I am so sorry for the family's loss.
