Michael Dewberry Obituary

DEWBERRY MICHAEL SIDNEY DEWBERRY (Age 42) Peacefully passed away on February 3, 2009, at his home in Vienna, VA. He was an owner and served as both a Member of the Board of Directors and as Corporate Secretary of The Dewberry Companies, one of the largest engineering and architectural businesses in the nation, with over 2,200 employees in 40 offices across the United States. Starting out life as a six-week premature baby, Dewberry quickly made up for lost time, catching up physically with his schoolmates, and soon displaying a precocious talent for science. At age 15 he entered and took first place in a national science contest sponsored by the U.S. Army. His winning paper garnered him an offer to be a research assistant at the Bethesda Naval Research Institute. While a young man, one of his early jobs in the family business was driving a survey truck - something that gave him the driving skills that later helped him nab a bank robber fleeing the scene. He pursued and cornered the thief‘s car at an intersection, pulled him from the car and pinned him to the ground until police arrived. For this, the Fairfax County Police sent him a letter of commendation. Over a decade in his twenties, Dewberry studied history, law and medicine at Marymount University, George Mason University and the University of St. Thomas. After having lived with his wife for a short time on the family boat and in Florida, the family made their home in Northern Virginia and North Carolina. Dewberry avidly pursued his hobbies of boating and sport fishing. However, his love and focus of his life was his wife and four children, to whom he devoted his constant affection. Michael Dewberry leaves behind his wife of 18 years, Stephanie Anne, and their four children, Michael Sidney Dewberry II, Katie Anne Dewberry, John Michael Dewberry and Kelly Anne Dewberry; his parents, Sidney O. Dewberry and Reva A. Dewberry, of Arlington, VA; his sister, Karen S. Grand Pre’ (Bruce R. Grand Pre’) of Oakton, VA; and his two brothers, Barry K. Dewberry (Arlene Evans) of Fairfax Station, VA, and Thomas L. Dewberry of Fairfax, VA; his brother-in-law, Thomas Anglin; and many more relatives, close friends, associates and neighbors. Services will be private and the family would like to thank all those who wish to send condolences. Contributions in memory of Michael Dewberry may be sent to St. Jude‘s Children‘s Research Center, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-0050.

I just heard of this yesterday. I haven't spoken to Mike since my late teens early 20's. He was a great friend to me back then and was there for me during some tough times. Great guy, good memories. Sad to hear this all these years later.

Dear Dewberry Family,
Mike came to mind tonight and somehow I landed on this site. Don't know if you still check these messages, but if you do read this one day, know that you are often in my thoughts. I hope the last few years have been healing for you all and that your lives are full of joy and peace.
All my best,
Jessica

Stephanie,

I reached out to you in Febuary when I saw the sad obituary regarding Michaels passing and sent the words I only knew at that time to say. But just this July (5 months later), I too lost my husband Patrick suddenly and unexpectedly, and there's not many people who can understand the pain and long journey we have ahead of us. If you have an opportunity, please contact me.

It just shouldn't have happened...to either of us or our families...not at this time in our lives. I hope to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Amy Goetting-Harrison

I am deeply saddened to recently hear of Michael's passing. My sincerest sympathies and condolences go out to the entire Dewberry family for your profound loss. I went to both elementary school (Jamestown) and high school (Congressional) with Michael and we lost touch during college years. I spent a few days last week trying to get back in touch with him through Facebook, unaware of his passing. I was so shocked and sad when I found out today. Michael was always so full of life and a joy to be around. He put a smile on everyone's face and was truly a great friend. Michael was also an extremely bright and witty person with so many interesting hobbies and interests, a true inspiration to others. I remember being so fascinated that a buddy of mine had his own laboratory and on-going experiments. You and your family will be in my prayers. May you rest in peace Michael.

I just got word of mike's passing. I am very sad to hear he is no longer with us. Mike's spirt will live on forever with me and everyone he touched, during his way too short time with us. I went to high school with him and shared many fun times with Mike and his family. My family's thoughts are with all. I miss you Mike.

I am so sad to hear of your family's loss. Mr. Dewberry was a kind, outgoing, and friendly man that always made me feel welcome in his home. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with him and his beautiful wife and babysitting their adorable children. Although I haven't seen the family in a while, I reflect often on the fond memories we made. They will be cherished forever.

I went to Congressional with Mike. Though we were not close (I was a grade behind him), I remember him well. He was always full of life and mischief and was well liked by many. It deeply saddens me to hear of his passing, because at the young age of 42, he had FAR TOO MUCH LIFE LEFT TO LIVE! I pray for you, his family...his children especially. You have lost your father far too early. I hope you have enough wonderful memories to carry and comfort you...live well...make him proud!

Dewberry Family --

My thoughts and prayers go out to you all. I was shocked to hear of his passing today... entirely too young to leave us. I was a Congressional classmate of "Tommy," but I vividly remember Mike having a larger than life personality. He always had a smile on his face and could be counted on for instigating a good time. I hope he's doing the same where he is now.

God bless,

To the Dewberry Family,

Working with Mike in the early 1990s led to many unforgettable experiences. He was always so full of life and eager to learn something new. He was excited about trying out each creative idea he came up with, and he had his beloved Stephanie to go along on each new adventure.

The world will be a much duller place without Michael Sidney Dewberry. We will miss him greatly.

My deepest condolences for you all at the sudden passing of Michael. I knew Michael from Congressional and was pleased to start my career at Dewberry 20+ years ago and to have the opportunity to reunite my friendship with Micheal during my 7 year tenure, and afterwards. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Stephanie and children,
How pleasant the memories of sun splashed days and our babies together. You and Mike are in many happy thoughts. Mike always made the children feel like royalty on tractor rides, climbing the giant rocks, trail rides, and with his very best syncronized fireworks shows on the 4th. Thank you for sharing! As the kids grow up and the years continue...we will remember ever so fondly his big heart and and warm smiles....If there is anything I can do for you do not hesitate to call or email me. May God be with you and all the family...
With sincere sympathy at this time of profound loss.
Love always,

Stephanie & Family,

I wanted to send my condolences to you and the rest of the family. It's unfortunate we have lost touch as we (the Pillor kids) grew older, but we always considered you and Mike great friends. Ill never forget Mike's sense of humor and fun loving attitude. I will also never forget his passion to create the best 4th of July fireworks shows!! Mike put smiles on all of our faces and he will truly be missed.

It's been 25 years since I saw most of my high school students, and Michael was one of the most memorable. Michael took my class because he thought Art would be an easy A. I don't think he realized how much work it would involve, but he rose to the occasion. I always knew he was a very gifted young man. I wish I could have had the opportunity to meet his wife and children, and they are in my thoughts and prayers.

The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

I read with great sadness about Michael’s passing and I would like to express my deepest condolences to his Family. I knew Michael from Congressional School and Marymount University; while we only shared a class or two at Marymount, Michael was never without a kind word; his concern when he asked you “how’s it going?” was genuine. He enriched the lives of all around him regardless of the level of friendship. Again, my deepest condolences and sympathy to his family.
