GILLIES

MICHAEL GILLIES

Michael Gillies, 73, of Reston, Virginia passed away on November 17, 2023 in the comfort and peace of his home, receiving smiles and love from family, close friends, and devoted aides up until his final moments.

Mike was born on September 4, 1950 to Rose Marie (Wisler) Gillies and Carl Lee Gillies in Plymouth, Indiana. He spent his childhood swimming in Koontz Lake and playing basketball and baseball with neighborhood friends, growing up quickly to work multiple jobs and fill the void as the stable father figure to his three younger siblings. He graduated from Oregon Davis High School and then Indiana State University, where he was a brother and Chapter President of Phi Gamma Delta.

He would tell everyone his greatest life accomplishment was convincing Patty Schwenk, also a graduate of Oregon Davis and Indiana State, to marry him on April 28, 1973. Shortly thereafter Mike joined the United States Navy and served 20 years as a P-3 Naval Flight Officer that included critical missions during the Cold War and Desert Storm, and retiring at the rank of Commander in 1996. During this time Mike and Patty had three sons, conducted countless moves, and built lasting friendships. They stayed in northern Virginia where Mike worked in Department of Defense consulting until pursuing his lifelong dream of entrepreneurship with the purchase of a security company in 2008 which he proudly administered until his final weeks.

Mike's favorite pastimes were bucket list travels including Ireland and an African safari, reading Mark Twain, coaching, sweet treats including his famous no-bake cookies, and watching airplanes takeoff and land at Dulles Airport with his son Rogan. His quick wit and humor walked a fine line of appropriateness yet was always somehow endearing. He will be remembered for enjoying the simple things in life, helping others, and making everyone in the room feel embraced and appreciated.

His passing came after an extended battle with compounding medical issues that stemmed from a genetic neuromuscular disease. He was preceded in death by his soulmate, Patty, by just five months. He is survived by his children Rogan, Grady, and Brett; daughter-in-law Allison, wife of Brett, two grandchildren Caroline and Cameron, and Ernesto Breton, partner of Grady. He is also survived by his three siblings Cindy King, Brenda Vermilyer, and Fred Huhnke.

Services will be held in Reston, Virginia on December 16. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to The Arc of Northern Virginia, a service organization supporting those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families for which he was a strong advocate and supporter.

Mike, it breaks my heart that you and Patty are no longer with us. I hadn´t seen you for along time, but every year I loved sending a Christmas card and receiving the traditional family picture. Condolences to your family.

Mike was my neighbor, friend, and classmate who lived just across the street from me growing up at Koontz Lake, IN. I remember Mike as sort of a rough and tumble fun-loving red-headed rebel with a quick wit who did not feel compelled to always go along with the crowd. He had a mind of his own with the confidence and determination to steer his own path in life. His military career as a Naval officer and his later success as a businessman attest to his grittiness. Mike was dealt more than his share of "bad breaks" in life, but he was a fighter and was able to overcome many obstacles and build a good life for Patty and their sons. I truly admire what Mike was able to accomplish in his 73 years and feel blessed to have known him. Rest in peace, my friend.

Mike was my big brother and my Hero. He was never afraid of a challenge, even welcoming them, saying it's how one grows. He was open and vocal about his love for Patty and his sons. The Grandkids were the icing on his cake! He often said his family was his proudest accomplishment.
He was a great example for my sons to see that coming from modest beginnings does not limit you unless you let it. I will forever miss him. Cindy

My beloved boss and leader. It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to someone who not only touched our lives but also made a profound impact on our community.

I stand before you as a testament to the incredible generosity and compassion of our dear departed boss. Nine years ago, I arrived in the United States through the Special Immigrant Visa program, designed for those who served and aided the USA during missions in Afghanistan. It was during this time that I had the privilege of serving in the US Army for nine years.

Due to ongoing threats, I was forced to leave my country. It was then that I had the honor of meeting Mr. Mike, who recognized my background as a security specialist and offered me the opportunity to join his company as the Operations Director. From the very beginning, he welcomed me with open arms and treated me with utmost respect.

Throughout my journey with Mr. Mike and his company, I found not only a boss but a mentor and a friend like a father. He taught me invaluable lessons about the United States, its values, and its people. He consistently honored my service to this great nation, and his kindness and support enabled me to become a proud United States citizen after five years.

Mr. Mike´s generosity, patience, and unwavering belief in my abilities have forever touched my heart. I am eternally grateful for the opportunities he provided and the trust he placed in me. His kindness and guidance will continue to inspire me as I carry his legacy forward.

Today, as we bid farewell to our dear boss, let us remember the impact he had on each of us and the countless lives he touched. May his memory serve as a reminder of the power of compassion, understanding, and belief in the potential of others.

Thank you.
