MICHAEL LIEBERMAN Obituary

LIEBERMAN Dr. MICHAEL D. LIEBERMAN Dr. Michael David Lieberman of Alexandria, VA died on October 20, 2016 after a short battle with cancer. He was 76 years old. Known affectionately as "Dr. Mike" by his patients and colleagues, he served the Alexandria and Mount Vernon communities for over 50 years as a general practice doctor. A Captain in the U.S. Navy, he was stationed at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC from 1965 to 1969. He went on to become the chief medical officer of Mt Vernon hospital, an adjunct professor at George Washington University, the co-proprietor of a Mount Vernon-based medical practice, and the Medical Director of the Woodbine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for 28 years. In his rare moments of free time, he was an avid sailor. He participated in several races from New England to Bermuda, winning many along with the crew of the Crackerjack, and also loved sailing with his wife on the Chesapeake in his own boat, the Elixir. Dr. Lieberman was cherished in the medical community and by his patients for his commitment to his work and compassion. He never let the billing clock tell him how long to spend with patients, and he loved being out in the community with neighbors, friends, and fellow Alexandrians. A gifted diagnostician, he spent long hours with his patients and saved many lives by identifying life-threatening illness before they became insurmountable. Many in our community sought him out not only for his medical expertise, but also his excellent advice on life and his warm personality. He will be greatly missed by his many friends, colleagues and patients, as well as sailors far and wide. Dr. Lieberman was born in Pittsburgh, PA on April 30, 1940. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Terri; stepsons, Zachary and Garth; daughter-in-law, Gabby; brother, Erik; brother-in-law, Ted; sisters-in-law, Sarah and Anne; mother-in-law, Roberta; father-in-law, Morton; nephews, Erik and Evan; nieces, Hallie and Elspeth; dogs, Nina and Ella; many other dear family and friends, and a deeply beloved community. Dr. Lieberman will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. I just heard today about Mike's passing, and am saddened to know that this bright light is gone from the Mt. Vernon community. I find myself reflecting on what a comfort it was to have him as my doctor for over 30 years. He and I were close in age, and we always talked about our careers and the pressures. But he always found time to have fun as well. His smile and willingness to hear me out always made me feel comfortable. My sympathy to Terri and the entire family.

What a sad day when I found out Dr. Lieberman passed. I had many many encounters with him and his office (I worked for another Dr.) When our office needed something he always came thru. I used to tell him we will stay late for your pt's and he did the same for our office. God Bless Dr. Mike you will be missed and hope you can do some good healing for my folks and sister in heaven. He was truly a wonderful friend and physician. I will always remember his compassion for the patients and his wonderful smile. It was a pleasure to have known him and he will be missed by so many.

Mike was not just my first cousin, but my best friend for more than 75 years. Life without him is hard to imagine. We agreed, 25 years ago, that I would be his first mate when he retired and took his boat into deep waters. My heart goes out to Terri and the children.

I would like to send my prayers to the family. May God be with you all at this time of loss. I will really miss Dr Lieberman. He has the spirit of an angel. He has always been a caring, considerate and respectable man. His smile followed him everywhere he went. He would enter the room with that smile and it would always make you feel better.
Working for Dr Lieberman was an honor as well. He loved his staff, his patients, his family and friends , his dogs and his Boat. He was a true example of Love for human kind. I know if heaven has a boat that you will be sailing in the sea with The Angels! You are an Angel to me, You have earned your wings from birth. You will be missed . Love Sonya C.
