Michael Smilow Obituary

Michael A Smilow (age 88) of Chevy Chase, Maryland passed away on Thursday, 9 October 2025. He was born in Washington, DC. His parents were Leo and Anna Smilow. His brother Joel passed away several years ago. Michael graduated from BCC High School and Johns Hopkins University. He served his country in the US Army and was commissioned as a 2nd LT in June 1960 and resigned as a Captain in 1968. His 45-year career in housing and mortgage finance included executive positions in both the private and public sectors involving mortgage finance, real estate investments and HUD. He retired from Fannie Mae. Then he traveled the world as a consultant for the IFC, a part of the World Bank. He served on public and private boards of directors including Children's Hospital, RMIC, Mellon Bank of Washington and Telebank. Michael is survived by his wife Barbara Goodhart Smilow. They were married for 65 loving and fulfilling years. They enjoyed three wonderful children, David (Tracey), Lisa Smilow Opsahl (Michael) and Marc (Jill, of blessed memory) and nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Services and burial will be held on Monday, 13 October, 2025 at 10 a.m. at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Chapel, 14321 Comus Road, Clarksburg, MD 20871. Lunch will follow the services at 5600 Wisconsin Ave, Chevy Chase, MD. Shiva will be held on Tuesday at 4 to 6 p.m. at 5600 Wisconsin Ave.
Services entrusted to Sagel Bloomfield Danzansky Goldbert Funeral Care.
