I offer belated condolences to family and friends of Milan Kubic. He served as my godfather at my baptism in Ludwigsburg, Germany in 1949, after he and my parents escaped Czechoslovakia in 1948 upon the election of the Communist Party there. I have no personal memory of the baptism or of ever having met Milan, but he and my mother had been fast friends in the Czech equivalent of high school and even published a broadsheet together in the months following the end of the German occupation of their country. My parents, and in particular my mother, followed his career with great interest and took vicarious pride in his successes. Although they remained in touch periodically, they only saw each other once again after they left the Displaced Persons camp in Ludwigsburg -- a brief meeting in Jerusalem when Milan was posted there. He and I corresponded several times over the last 20 years and I treasure his reminiscences of my parents, whom he always described in glowing terms. I thoroughly enjoyed his memoir -- what a gifted writer to have made a remarkable career communicating in a second language. I regret that I did not make the effort to meet him.
