Mildrene Chaney Thomasson

Mildrene Chaney Thomasson, 99, passed away on Friday September 13, 2024 at her home in Springfield, VA. She was born in Horse Cave (Uno), KY in 1925, the daughter of Elizabeth (Bettie) and Thomas (Trigg) Chaney. She was a devoted wife to the late Brig. General Samuel M. Thomasson, Jr. and mother to Samuel M. Thomasson III and Elizabeth Ann Thomasson.

Chaney as she was known to her friends, attended a business college after high school and then moved to Dayton OH to work for the war effort. She served as a senior secretary for the Ballistic Missile Division of the Army Air Corp meeting many prominent figures during WWII. Following the end of the war, she married and became a military wife when her husband finished law school and re-enlisted in what was then the US Air Force. She traveled the world living in Japan during the Korean War and later living in France for three years. She also lived at multiple bases across the United States serving as the president of the Officers Wives Club and the Women's Golf Club. She doted on her children serving as a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout leader. She was an avid golfer playing several times a week for many years. She loved gardening and spending time outdoors. When she developed leukemia in her later 40s, she participated in an experimental program at Johns Hopkins which saved her life. She remained in touch with her doctors for many years, thankful for their devoted care. In her later years she traveled extensively to Florida, Russia, Mississippi, Kentucky, Colorado, California, Mexico and Hawaii, enjoying her many family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held on September 28 at the Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Dr., Alexandria, VA at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thomasson Family Memorial Nursing Scholarship at the University of Mississippi Foundation, 406 University Ave., Oxford, MS 38655 or online at UMfoundation.com.
