Millidge Walker Obituary
Millidge P. Walker
Millidge Walker, long-time resident of Chevy Chase, MD and professor at American University (AU), died peacefully on November 3, 2022, in Portland, OR. He was 100 years old.
Mil's life revolved around Asia. He was born in China to missionary parents, served in the US Army in Japan, met his wife and married her in India, conducted his doctoral research on Indonesia and taught Southeast Asian politics during his 25 years as a professor at AU's School of International Service and School of Government and Public Affairs. These episodes play a prominent role in his recently published memoir, Asian Encounters: Early Life, Travels, and Family.
"Bapak" is survived by his wife of 70 years, Irene Tinker, three children, five grandchildren and one great granddaughter—leaving a hole in all our hearts.
A small memorial gathering is scheduled for early January 2023 in Portland, OR. In addition, friends and family may wish to celebrate Mil's life and passions through donations to the Tinker-Walker Fellowship, which supports graduate students at American University undertaking international research or internships. Contributions may be made in Mil's honor at https://giving.american.edu.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting Millidge, I feel deeply indebted to him for starting Dev Salon with Irene, an event which has evolved and connected me to so many wonderful people. I will be sharing this obituary at our next Development Drinks event - which grew from Irene and Millidge's original gathering and continues on with both Portland and Beaverton locations, hosted by GlobalPDX.
We humbly invite any family and friends of Millidge to join us at these events, and send condolences from the entire GlobalPDX Community that they founded.

Dearest Irene and Family: Wishing you heartfelt condolences on the passing of Mil, a great man, whom I've had the pleasure of knowing for nearly 30 years! We have many fond memories of times together in Vancouver, Ottawa, Washington, DC, Portland and even your 50th wedding anniversary in Delhi! May he rest in peace and we look forward to reading his recently published memoirs, and yours too. Much love from Gisèle, Ishkandar and family.
