MIRIAM LAWSON Obituary

LAWSON, Miriam Ellen, age 86, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2021. She was born in April 1935 in Indiana to Thomas and Alice Lawson. Throughout her life, Miriam was an educator and fierce advocate for human rights, civil rights and justice for persecuted humanity. She believed education was important for a good life and will be remembered for her decades of coaching, mentoring and teaching young people all over the country. In her unassuming way, Miriam modeled what she inspired young girls and boys to later become -- self-assured, bright, change-makers who took calculated risks and broke barriers. She was a graduate of Georgetown University School of Law (JD 1981), Butler University (MS 1963) and University of Nebraska (BS 1960). For many years Miriam worked in the Community Relations Division of the US Justice Department. She was known for her advocacy for community empowerment, immigrant rights and conflict resolution strategies from Washington, DC to Michigan and California to Miami, Haiti and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. She was a member of the Washington DC Bar Association, Georgetown University Alumnae Association, Maryland State Teachers Association, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Miriam loved to travel and lived in many different regions of the U.S., but wherever she made her home she was sure to contribute to the community. She served on numerous boards including North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University Strategic Advisory Board, Hoke County-Blue Springs Community Development Corp, and co-founder of Miami Love in Florida. Miriam was a spiritual leader and introduced her family and friends to eastern philosophy, herbal medicine, Buddhism, Reiki and many metaphysical teachings. In North Carolina she realized her dream to develop a spiritual retreat called Elm Forest where people came to seek spiritual guidance, listen to Miriam play the crystal bowls and walk the labyrinth. Miriam was a pioneer and always on the forefront when it came to women's rights, individually contributing with her own career and helping to widen the road for future generations of women entering the profession. Her life was a living example of someone who radiates love and care in her professional and creative endeavors, from an inner source of spirituality and firm moral principles. Miriam left a legacy for her family and will be forever cherished by her son, Frederick Cravens and his wife Yvette, daughter Felice Summers Boyd, grandchildren Asha Michelle Wilson and Marcus Cravens and wife Kristy, and sister Avril Holeyfield. Also lovingly survived by nephews and nieces, in-laws and a host of friends, including church and drum circle peers. She leaves a sisterhood of kindred spirits. All of us she loved and touched deeply. A virtual memorial service celebrating Miriam's life will be held at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 23, 2021. Email [email protected] for information.

My Dearest Miriam:
Since I lost you I also lost my beloved Otis. Today, Valentines Day 2023, I don´t feel loss, but a sense of wealth for having been Blessed by our shared experiences. I feel grateful for the gift of knowing you. I am indeed enriched today because of the love we shared then. Rest in Peace, Dear One.

I'm so grateful to Miriam when she shared with me many years ago her knowledge of Louise L. Hay, who wrote many New Thought self-help books. I still use what I've learned till this day and will continue it the rest of my life...thank you Miriam Lawson. ~peace~

I met Miriam at her property, Elm Forest, where I walked her labyrinth and spent countless hours with her. It was the beginning of our priceless sisterhood.

My gratitude for having Miriam in my life far exceeds my sorrow from losing her. I will be warmed and comforted by memories of her countless expressions of love and kindness she so generously gave me, and so many others in her wide circle of friends and family. Felice, Asha, family and friends - she is gone from our sight, but her love is eternal.

I met Miriam through my Buddhist friend Gail around 1996 which lead to meeting her daughter and granddaughter, Felicia and Asha, and we all became friends. Miriam bestowed a great deal of wisdom and healthful insight into my life throughout yearsand for that, i am truly grateful. Although she’ll be missed in this lifeI celebrate her in love and in spirit. My condolences and profound prayers for strength and comfort to Felicia, Asha and to all Miriam’s dear family members and friends...with much love, SharMu

Miriam came into my life as a shining beacon at one of my lowest moments as a young adult. She shared her roof and her family while working during the day and attending law school in the evening. She accomplished much by sharing her inner light with many. Sending long distance hugs and condolences. ~Lynne

I was one of the people that Miriam introduced to Buddhism, and I stuck with it for many years, even though she had moved on. My mother is asked Miriam to be a godmother be to me in the sense of being another woman to guide me in my growing up years. She is was always a listening ear with her own unique perspective. I loved her very much, and there is a picture of her on my wall to remind me of her spirit. RIP

We Talked endlessly. We laughed and we shared each others' pain. We comforted one another. We cried together. Now, there are no more tears and no more pain for you. You are free!! Love you, ALWAYS, Ray "WEEPING MAY endure for a night, but JOY cometh in the morning!!!"
