Mitchell Wendell (Age 99)

Mitchell Wendell, a pioneer and renowned expert in the use of interstate compacts governing states' work across jurisdictions, died July 8, 2022 in Cupertino, California. He was three weeks shy of his 100th birthday.

Mitchell Wendell was born in 1922 to Anna Schilling and Benjamin Wendell, and grew up in Brooklyn. Despite progressive blindness, he received an A.B. from Brooklyn College and an LL.B. and Ph.D. from Columbia University where he served as Editor of the Columbia Law Review. He subsequently taught Political Science at Hunter College (1946-47), Hamilton College (1947-49) and American International College (1949-62). Mr. Wendell moved his legal and consulting practice to Washington, DC. in 1962 and then to Potomac, MD. In the early 1970s, he married Blanquita Maldonado who died in 1999. While a resident of Asbury Village in Gaithersburg, Mr. Wendell met his second wife, Lois Walton Boesch and married in 2000. Mr. and Mrs. Wendell moved to Ryderwood Village in Silver Spring in 2008 before moving to Sunny View Retirement Community in Cupertino, CA in 2013. Lois Wendell died in 2014.

An avid afficionado of classical symphonic and operatic music, Mr. Wendell also enjoyed international travel by cruise ship. He continued his interest in political science to the end, reading and discussing audiobooks on politics with friends and relatives. Another interest for Mr. Wendell in later years was helping his friend Anatoliy Babayev develop JustPhone, a simple voice-controlled phone and app for seniors and for those with visual impairment.

Mr. Wendell leaves behind: a cousin Murray Pollack of Washington, DC and his children, Haley Pollack of Oakland, CA and Seth Pollack of Chicago, IL; and another cousin's children, Robin Sadker Daugherty of Denver, CO and Jacqueline Sadker Kamins of Portland OR. His family also includes: Robert Boesch (Mary Nelson) of New York, NY; Laura Kleinerman of New York, NY; William (Elise) Boesch of Pensacola, FL; Doris Boesch of Los Altos, CA; Richard Boesch (Daryll Harris) of Hyattsville, MD; their collective six children and five grandchildren.

Luda and got to know Mitch and Blanquita through our mutual friends, Dan and Jane Coughlin. The three couples entertained each other for dinner at our respective homes. Mitch had an extensive collection of LP record albums of operas and he would go directly to the album he wanted to play. His blindness did not deter him. We were amazed at his ability to travel to many different state capitals to meet with his clients in state government. Mitch was a delightful conversationalist and he had wonderful sense of humor.

Luda joins me offering our condolences for your loss.
