I met Morty and Norma Lee Funger shortly after I arrived at GW as vice president in 1983. They were prepared to make a significant investment in the university. Since Morty was involved in real estate, he had a particular interest in buildings. We met several times and decided the best investment would be to renovate what was then called Building C and establish an endowment to provide for its care in perpetuity. It became Funger Hall, which is now one the two major facilities housing the business school. Morty would periodically visit the building and let me know of any repairs he thought it needed, which I would quickly communicate to the physical plant department! He felt a real sense of connection to his building and the university. He was just a warm and caring friend, who wanted to do good in his community. I gained a lot from knowing him and Norma Lee.

It was a great joy to be included in so many Funger events. Mort and Norma Lee were two of the most generous people I´ve ever known. Some of the best times of my life were while living next to Scott and Holly, and our family was included in so many Funger events we felt like Family. The world was made so much a better place because of the character and generosity of Mort Norma Lee (and Scott) but they left a legacy of great family members and friends to carry on their good works. Rest in Peace- lives well lived.

Dear Funger family, my parents, Howard and Marilyn Niederman, loved your mom and dad and always appreciated their hospitality when they stayed with them. My mom and Norma Lee knew each other since they were little girls growing up in DC. They maintained a lifelong friendship till the end. They were wonderful people and will be sorely missed.
