MORTON FUNGER

Morton Funger, 92, of Potomac, MD died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, January 6, 2023 , surrounded by his children who adored him.

Morty was born June 19,1930 in Washington, DC to Betty and Moe Funger and graduated from George Washington University.

Morty always said he knew a good thing when he saw it. On a summer day when he was 15, he met Norma Lee Cohen and that was the beginning of their 70-year marriage. It was a partnership that brought blessings in many ways.

He was successful in Washington, DC real estate development as a principal of Community Builders, OFC Company, Condur Development and Community Realty Company Inc.

Morty supported many charitable and philanthropic organizations including: Trustee Emeritus, George Washington University, Board of Directors of Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, Board of Directors Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Trustees Council of the National Gallery of Art, President of the Apartment and Office Building Association, member of both YPO and CEO, as well as many Jewish organizations.

Morty was an avid tennis player, art collector, world traveler and reluctant golfer, who loved anything related to aviation. If you were to ask him what he was most proud of and what were his greatest treasures, he would list his wife Norma Lee, who preceded him in death, and his four children: Lydia (Bill) McClain, Melanie (Paul) Nichols, Keith (Mauri) Funger and the late W. Scott (Holly) Funger. Those children showered him with the joy of ten grandchildren: Zachary (Ali), Spencer (Emily), Caitlin, Teddy, Haley, Sam, Sawyer, Celeste, Nick and Amanda, and four great grandchildren.

Morty was a humble, kind and gentle man, known for his integrity.

He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Morty and Norma Lee were both such generous and giving people. I will never forget their friendship with my parents and their kindness towards them. Wonderful people who will be missed

I met Morty and Norma Lee Funger shortly after I arrived at GW as vice president in 1983. They were prepared to make a significant investment in the university. Since Morty was involved in real estate, he had a particular interest in buildings. We met several times and decided the best investment would be to renovate what was then called Building C and establish an endowment to provide for its care in perpetuity. It became Funger Hall, which is now one the two major facilities housing the business school. Morty would periodically visit the building and let me know of any repairs he thought it needed, which I would quickly communicate to the physical plant department! He felt a real sense of connection to his building and the university. He was just a warm and caring friend, who wanted to do good in his community. I gained a lot from knowing him and Norma Lee.

It was a great joy to be included in so many Funger events. Mort and Norma Lee were two of the most generous people I´ve ever known. Some of the best times of my life were while living next to Scott and Holly, and our family was included in so many Funger events we felt like Family. The world was made so much a better place because of the character and generosity of Mort Norma Lee (and Scott) but they left a legacy of great family members and friends to carry on their good works. Rest in Peace- lives well lived.

Dear Funger family, my parents, Howard and Marilyn Niederman, loved your mom and dad and always appreciated their hospitality when they stayed with them. My mom and Norma Lee knew each other since they were little girls growing up in DC. They maintained a lifelong friendship till the end. They were wonderful people and will be sorely missed.
