Myron Kline Obituary

KLINE MYRON MICHAEL KLINE January 6, 1937 - December 25, 2011 Myron Michael "Mike" Kline, 74, died Sunday, December 25, 2011 at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Born in Los Angeles, California, Mike was the son of William and Alice (Rosenberg) Kline. He entered the United States Air Force immediately after graduating high school. He served as an Intelligence Specialist from 1954 to 1958, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After leaving the military he received his Bachelor's Degree from George Washington University in Washington DC. In 1960, Mike began his long service with the Central Intelligence Agency where, for much of his career, he focused on Latin American issues. He served on field assignments to Japan, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Brazil and Portugal where he was an advisor to senior U.S. Government officials overseas. In 1982 he was promoted to the ranks of the Senior Intelligence Service and held a number of responsible Agency management positions in Washington, DC. Mike earned both his Masters and Doctorate in International Relations at the University of Miami. In 1988, he was the CIA Officer-in-Residence and Associate Professor on the faculty of the University of Miami's Graduate School of International Studies. Mike retired from the Agency in 1990. For a number of years following his retirement he worked as a consultant to various government agencies and wrote and published several articles on international affairs. Most recently, he developed his skills as a gourmet cook, added to his extensive music collection, and indulged in his passion for travel. Mike also enjoyed spending time with friends and family at his summer home in MN where he discovered a talent for gardening. Mike was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Andrew Kline. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Joyce Rortvedt Kline; his daughter and son-in-law, Kirsten and Alex Blakemore of Reston, VA; his two sons, Eric Kline of Reston, VA and Mark Kline of Mexico, NY; his granddaughter, Andrea Blakemore of Boston MA, and his sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Errol Zeiger of Chapel Hill, NC. Funeral and burial services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a date yet to be determined. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to support the research of Dr. Hank Van Deventer at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, CB#7295 Chapel Hill, NC, 27599-7295. Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home in Durham, NC is assisting the Kline family.

Dear Joyce,
Charlie and I were dismayed to learn of Mike's passing. We have you and your family in our thought and prayers. You and Mike have been such dear friends over the years. Both Charlie and I will always remember Mike as a trusted friend and colleague. The last time we saw you, Mike and I exchanged stories about our gardening escapades. I had never seen him quite so enthusiastic about such an activity. I will always remember this about Mike. We want you to know that we are thinking of you, Joyce.

My husband, Bill, and Mike went through a number of training courses together years ago. Unfortunately, Bill preceeded Mike in death, but were he here, he would have wanted to let you know his respect for Mike. May God bring you peace in this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Mosebey (Mrs. William L. Mosebey, Jr.)
