June 10, 1935 – September 12, 2025
Nancy Emmaline Snyder Muntzing, known affectionately as "Nan," and lovingly called "Twinkle" by her grandchildren, passed away on September 12, 2025, with family by her side. She was born on June 10, 1935, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Edith "Dess" and Tom Snyder, and grew up in Mount Hope.
A gifted student and musician, she was valedictorian of her high school class and went on to study voice and piano at the University of Michigan, the Conservatory of Zürich in Switzerland, and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she earned her master's degree in music.
In 1959, Nan married the love of her life, the late L. Manning Muntzing. Together, they raised their four surviving children, Catherine Boyden, Elizabeth McKaig, Nancy Sprinkle, and Stuart Skok. They were later blessed with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who were the joy of her life. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in West Virginia.
Nan's beautiful alto voice filled concert halls and sanctuaries across the East Coast. She served as a soloist at The National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., for 23 years and performed with orchestras including the Harrisburg Symphony, where one of her most treasured performances was Mahler's Resurrection Symphony.
A devoted patron of the arts, Nan co-founded the Potomac Theatre Company in 1987, enriching her community with live theatre. She shared her love of music through annual Christmas programs, which she continued to present with cherished friends until her final performance at age 89. An accomplished Master Bridge player, she played nearly every week. She was also active in civic and cultural organizations including the Avenel Club of Potomac, Junior League of Washington, the Colonial Dames, and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Nan was deeply proud of her West Virginia roots, her Presbyterian faith, and her family. She will be remembered for her generosity, her music, her sense of humor, and her unwavering love for those around her.
Her legacy of music, faith, optimism, and family lives on in all who knew and loved her.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary at The National Presbyterian Church, 4101 Nebraska Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20016, with Reverend Lisa Larsen officiating, followed by a reception at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Nan's memory to Montgomery Playhouse in Gaithersburg, Maryland,
www.montgomeryplayhouse.org, to continue her passioned support of community theatre for the next generations of aspiring actors and musicians.
