Kauffman

Nicholas John Kauffman

After battling Multiple Myeloma for several years Nick Kauffman died on June 6, 2022 after heroic and caring efforts by the Sibley Memorial Hospital medical staff. He was 84 years old.

Nick grew up in Little Falls, NY and moved to D.C. in 1976. He was interested and active in local civic affairs and was a long time representative to the Federation of Community Associations. He retired from the DC Department of Energy & Environment which reflected his dedication to environmental protection and preservation of nature in DC.

Nick loved to play golf; and was instrumental in bringing pickleball to the Palisades community. He had a soft spot for animals and adopted numerous "rescue" pets including his beloved pit bull Kiki.

Nick is survived by his wife and four children. He is predeceased by his daughter Louise. He was held with deep affection by his family and friends and instantly liked by those with whom he became acquainted.

A memorial celebration will take place in the near future. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Little Falls, NY.

Nick was a shop steward during my tenure as President of Local 2725. He was always inspiring on how he view the challenges we faced. He was always concerned in the well being of the employees he represented and always there when I needed him.

Nick!! In my search for words to understand our relationship to Nick I must begin by saying he met me and got me involved with the Union AFGE, Local 2725. He helped me to become a Steward and upon his retirement, little did I know that I would take his mantle as Chief Shop Steward his former position in the Union/Agency. I have been in this position since 2008. Thank You Nick until we meet again.

I met Nick playing pickleball at the Palisades. He was one of the first players there, and he set the tone for all who followed. He welcomed everyone with humor and good fellowship. He worked tirelessly to improve the facilities. While he played well, I think he got the most joy out of watching others improve their games. He was a joy to be around, and he is missed. Condolences to his family.

Nick was a very kind and considerate person. He was very thoughtful of all the staff members here in this agency (DOEE). He will truly be missed.

Sending my love, thoughts and prayers to his family during this tough time. May God give you the strength of endurance and patience in Jesus' name!
