Norbert Hankin

Norbert Hankin, renowned physicist and health scientist, died on May 24, 2024 at age 91. Norbert's life included a 40-year career at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as one of the agency's first employees. His achievements in life included designing one of the first gamma ray detectors and monitoring the effects of non-ionizing radiation from various devices, including cell phones. His greatest achievement was his family, including a loving wife, Carol,;children, Stephanie Hilmantel (Gene), and Samuel Hankin (Sharon); stepdaughters Elaina Maness (Chris), Elissa Bush (David), and April Jacobowitz. Norbert also is survived by Tristan Hankin and Samantha Jacobowitz, grandson and granddaughter, whom Norbert adopted and raised as his son and daughter. Also, Norbert had nine other grandchildren: Amy LaFarr (Jim), Joe Hankin (Jordan), Robin Kusel (Matt), Adam Hilmantel, Jesse Maness, Ilyssa Maness, Josh Bush, Claire Bush, and Paulina Bush. Survivors also include six great-grandchildren. Norbert suffered from Alzheimer's Disease, which undermined his great intellect but could not diminish his love for his family.
Funeral services will start at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at Judean Memorial Gardens, 16225 Batchellors Forest Road, Olney, Maryland.
