NORMA STEWART Obituary

STEWART NORMA JENKINS STEWART Norma Jenkins Stewart, philanthropist, humanitarian, passionate volunteer, senior executive retiree of the Government of the District of Columbia, and proud resident of Prince George's County, Maryland, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021. A native Floridian, Norma was a generous donor, dedicated alumna of the Howard University College of Pharmacy where she served on the Board of Visitors since 2012. She retired from DC Government in 2000 after having served as the senior executive responsible for public health regulation including: pharmaceutical, radiological, and medical services; healthcare facilities; and food protection. Norma co-founded (with the revered late Dr. Edward Mazique) and led the first board of a branch of The Boys and Girls Club of America at the Family Life Center at Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, DC. She also held Board Director positions with The Washington, DC Alumnae Foundation of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated, and Family Matters of Greater Washington. A fierce promoter of the arts as an essential component of the development of youth, she served on the Kennedy Center Women's Committee for the National Symphony Orchestra. A servant leader, Norma was energetic, charismatic, inspiring and lifted as she climbed. She left indelible imprints on the numerous public service organizations where she was consistently Madam Chair leading life-changing programming and fundraising efforts. These included: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; DC Continental Societies, Incorporated; Prince George's County (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated; The Moles; and The Camp Springs Civic Association. Norma was known for advancing youth causes as the object of the charitable work of these organizations. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband John T. Stewart, III. She is survived by daughters Stacye, Natasha, and Shelli; granddaughters Brea and Logan; and grandson Nathaniel. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, August 6, 2021 at Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church located at 7707 Allentown Road, Fort Washington, Maryland, commencing with the 9 a.m. Viewing; 10 a.m. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Continental Societies, and Moles Ceremonies; and ending after the 11 a.m. Service. The interment is private. I would like to say that I have known Norma for over fifty years. She has always been such a loving, kind, and generous person. She has always been ready and willing to help in any situation. She was such a special person. I thank God for her friendship. I will love and miss her forever.
