PAMELA BARRETT Obituary

BARRETT PAMELA SOLDWEDEL BARRETT Pamela Soldwedel Barrett passed away peacefully at her home in Washington, DC, on May 23, 2015 after a brief illness. She was 89. Barrett, who went by her maiden name in the art world, was a noted sculptor who worked in both stone and metal. Her elegant abstract pieces decorate several buildings in the city of Washington and grace numerous private collections across the country and overseas. A native New Yorker, Soldwedel was the only child of architect and painter Frederic Soldwedel and his wife, the former Jean Potter. Soldwedel was a graduate of Bennington College. She enjoyed a varied early career that included work as a fabric designer, fashion show producer, radio disc jockey, radio and television commentator and producer, magazine publisher and artistic coordinator in packaging design for Houbigant perfumes Only after moving to Washington, DC, in the early 1970s did Soldwedel pursue a lifelong interest in sculpture. She attended the Corcoran College of Art and Design, where she received the Martha von Hirsh Award and the Mary Lay Thom Sculpture Award for most outstanding work. Soldwedel earned the R.C.G. Merit Award of Excellence in 1993 and was the 1995 recipient of the Artists Equity Association's "best in show" Merry Slocum Bean Award. In 2005, Soldwedel was awarded a generous grant to pursue her work from the E.D. Foundation. In 2007, she received a prize for her entry in the Art League of Washington's sculpture show at Washington Square. She is survived by her husband, Richard D. Barrett, her daughter Karin Immerman and two granddaughters, Melissa and Hannah. Soldwedel had three stepchildren, Randy Barrett (spouse: Kendall) , Kimball Barrett and David Barrett (spouse: Molly) and six step grandchildren: Zack Barrett, Tyson Barrett, Caleb Barrett, Grace Barrett, Moses Barrett and Ella Barrett. No service is planned at this time. For more information on Pamela Soldwedel Barrett's work, go to: www.soldwedelsculptures.com www.soldwedelsculptures.com

Pamela was my sister Florence Moorshed Soldwedel's step daughter. I met her when I was 14 and she was 20. I thought at the time that she was the most beautiful lady I ever met. I did get to meet Kip Soldwedel the painter of the big ships during the 200th anniversary of our country. I am very sad she passed without me ever getting to see her again. May Pamela rest in peace.
